Hand Tools that Everyone Needs
Every home improvement or home remodeling job comes with its own set of rules and instructions. However, before you can even get started on your project, you must have the right tools. You do not want to be all suited up and ready to start working, or be in the thick of things, before realizing you are lacking an essential tool for the job. No one wants to leave what he or she is doing and return to the home improvement or hardware store in the middle of a project. To ensure that you will not have to do this, make a list of everything you definitely need, and everything you might need before you start working, then make a trip to the store. Hopefully you will only have to go once.
The most important part of any remodeling project is staying safe. Depending on what you are doing, you may need safety goggles, rubber gloves, protective clothing, a hard hat, a dust mask, or something else. Think ahead to all exigencies and suit up accordingly. If you are painting, make sure to read the paint label carefully. Should the paint come into contact with your skin? If not, wear gloves and long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Every time I paint, I somehow manage to get paint in my eye. I now avoid this by wearing glasses or goggles when I work, especially if I am painting over my head. I also wear a hat or a bandana to keep the paint out of my hair, but that is a purely cosmetic concern.
Hand tools are usually a required part of any home improvement project. Stanley tools and Leatherman tools often come in handy. It never hurts to have an all-in-one Leatherman lying around when you take up any remodeling task. Most of the crucial hand tools come in tool kits that you can get at your local home improvement store. Pick up a multi-tiered tool box and read about its contents. You can usually find screwdrivers, a hammer, a chisel, and other key ingredients. Alternatively, you can buy all the items separately so you are sure you have everything you want.
You may not want to invest in purchasing a lot of new tools if you expect that you will only need them for a single project. For instance, if you are sanding your hardwood floors or your back deck and cannot foresee yourself sanding them again for many years, it would probably not pay off to buy a heavy duty sander. You can simply rent on for a weekend and save yourself a lot of money. However most of the items you will need for basic jobs are small and cheap. You will get a lot of use out of a plastic putty knife, nails, a tile cutter, paint brushes, utility knifes, framing squares, and things of that nature. One good investment that you will find yourself using again and again is a cordless drill. This is a great item to spend good money on, because the money you spend will pay off in reliable usage.

Purchasing Carpenter Tools
Carpenter tools make an idealistic gift for the budding carpenter in your family and it doesn't even need to be their birthday or even Xmas for you to give it to them. These are great gifts for any time and any budding carpenter will love them as would any experienced carpenter.
Just understand what level of carpentry they are at. For I am sure you want to give them something they will use. The only problem with that though is that if you, yourself aren't a carpenter then how do you go about choosing the right tools?
It's not as easy as it might sound, and there are a few things that you should watch out for. The first and number one thing is to watch out for the Unbelievable Bargain. No such thing exists. If it's unbelievable then there's something wrong somewhere. Unless of course they are running some type of clearance. Now if you run across a bargain and it's a well known brand you should snap up the tools immediately. Good carpenter tools at bargain prices are rare, so get them when you can.
Pro woodworkers will know what the good tool brands are and will know when to snatch them up and when to run the other way. In the case of the naive gift purchaser though, I would suggest sticking to something you can be assured of even if it's not at the bargain price you had hoped for. Here especially more than anyplace else, the Latin "Caveat Emptor" holds true, purchasers certainly beware of what you're getting yourself into. Good tools aren't cheap and experience woodworkers know the difference between a good tool and a poor tool. So, don't try to guess and fool them.
Also if you're purchasing the carpenter tools for somebody who's been at it for quite a hefty sum of time then the last thing that you'll want to do will be to give them lower-ranking grade carpenter tools. Something which comes in a set might be good for the novice who is just starting and thus has no clear idea of what they need, but that unquestionably won't do for the experienced carpenter. They need the good tools for several reason and yes one might be for the ego.
These carpenter tools should be of first-class caliber so that the receiver of your gift realizes the time and effort you put into purchasing the perfect carpenter tools for them. For the novice you can purchase them something more sophisticated when they can tell the difference between the tools and when they can feel the difference of holding a good set of carpenter tools in their hands as opposing to the beginner's set you gave them!
But if you have trouble deciding which set of carpenter tools to get ask a friendly sales person for advice and more often than not you'll leave the shop satisfied that you came forth with the real thing. You can also buy a gift card to their favorite tool store. You can certainly know the recipient of the gift will be happy for the first class gift you gave them.
Are Strapping Tools Just For Industrial Usage Or Could They Be Used At Home?
Generally speaking, strapping tools and plastic or metal strapping bands are an industrial requirement and aren't usually used in home settings. There are many home-based businesses that use these strapping machines from time to time in the packaging and shipping of their products, but the general homeowner would be better off using strong tape or twine for any sort of strapping of material around the home. Because of the size and material costs for strapping units and the strapping material itself, the homeowner wouldn't get as much benefit out of having one of these bulky units around the home. Innovation and consumer demand will provide a smaller, cheaper and more cost-effective way to provide strapping operations in the home or home-based business, but at this time there doesn't seem to be any real call for this form of portable, cost-effective strapping unit.
These units are generally used in more industrial areas and businesses. Any sort of home strapping unit would most likely make use of the cheaper plastic strapping that is available. In this way the homeowner could package up whatever needed to be strapped easily and economically. As it stands now, there aren't many ways for the homeowner to strap items together except for tape, twine or heavy cord. There are companies that specialize in the sale of oversized rubber bands that allow for many items to be wrapped together, but this isn't really strapping them together in the strictest sense.
The machines that use metal banding provide a very strong wrapping system but the straps themselves are sometimes sharp along the edges and if the strap gets banged up in transit, sometimes jagged edges can happen. This makes the handling of the steel strapping something that needs to be done with a lot of care. Some specialized training is required to properly use a strapping machine. If used by amateurs, the strapping can sometimes be bound on too loosely or not fastened off properly. Both of these mistakes can mean a dangerous package that may shift or completely topple over in transit.
There will most likely be a strapping machine that is meant to be used in and around the home or garage, but at this time it's not generally available to the public. If enough business owners start to demand that a machine of this sort should be created, then you can be sure that one will quickly be made to fill that need. Right now however, there is just not enough use for a strapping machine to be in and around the home on a regular basis. There's no sense having a machine around your home or garage that you rarely use, when a simple roll of duct tape or some heavy cord will do the trick just as well. When a strapping machine is brought to market that the homeowner can use cheaply and cost-effectively, you can be sure that others will also come out with the same sort of machine. Until that time, industrial strapping machines, whether using metal or plastic strapping, will be the choice of homeowners and businesses alike.
