Hand Held Power Tools - A Closer Look
Since the advent of man, tools have assisted him in his various pursuits. Tools have helped man to survive. They have also helped him to gather food by hunting and enabled him construct a shelter to guard his family against the perils of the wild. These tools have changed from bone to metal with the passing of time and the development of civilization.
These tools have somehow also become a symbol of man's ingenuity and creativity. In the contemporary world, hand operated working tools have been replaced by power tools. These tools have become so common that it has become customary to find an electric powered saw or electric powered drill, on a woodworker's workshop.
Nail Gun
This tool is fundamentally a hammer which hits the nail in one go. Simply put, this tool is equipped for quicker and accurate nail driving. The principle governing their working can be compressed air, electromagnetism or small explosive charges. They are also called as bradders, pin nailers, for smaller nail guns, and brad nailers. The nail gun has made the age-old hammer obsolete and has become the darling hand held power tool amongst builders
Hand Held Power Drill
Akin to the age old drill, the Hand held Power Drill is used for boring holes and can be driven by gas, electricity or motor. This hand powered or hand held power drill comes with a rotating drill bit. This equipment works by pressing the rotating drill bit against a wood piece, where the tip of the drill bores into the wood, shaving off bits and pieces of wood and creates a hole. The hand held power drills are quite well liked amongst the hand held power tools.
Electric Sanders
These hand held power tools make the mundane sanding procedures fast and give a consistent sanding. They are also quite efficient in providing a smooth finish to the wood pieces. Since they are hand held devices, they can be used to sand curved areas of a wood piece, as well as flat surfaces.
Electric Powered Jig Saws
These Electric Powered Jig Saws are an incredible variety of hand held power tools. Their function is similar to a hand powered jigsaw; the only difference is that an electric powered jig saw cuts the wood pieces in to various shapes, only more efficiently and quickly. It also lessens the woodworker's work as they are powered by a motor and make sawing quick, easy and precise. These tools are quite apt for cutting wood pieces in a straight simple cut or cutting them into different shapes and sizes.
The bottom line is that the hand held power tools are not very different from their hand powered forerunners. Their functionality and use remains the same. The only difference lies in increased efficiency and precision.

The Air Compressor Buying Guide For Air Compressor Newbies
You're probably shopping for an air compressor because you've heard about the power of air tools over electric tools. If it's not more torque and higher RPMs you're looking for then maybe it's the easy interchange between tools - almost as simple as plugging the tool into an outlet. Either way you're convinced that you need an air compressor but you're not quite sure where to start. This article will give you some of the basics about air compressors and then guide you through to selection by asking you five questions.
Here are some of the key attributes you'll be paying attention to when you start shopping for your air compressor:
Horsepower:
Air compressors, as their name implies, compress air. This takes an engine and engines have horsepower. The horsepower of the engine you're considering has direct impact on all the other aspects of your compressor's performance. Horsepower is often inflated, and you should be paying closer attention to the engine's rated amperage for an idea of how powerful it is.
PSI:
PSI stands for pounds for square inch. Of course as you remember from high school physics class PSI is a measurement of pressure. To be exact, how many pounds of pressure is applied per square inch. The PSI rating is one of the crucial ratings in the air compressor to understand as air tools have a minimum amount of PSI required to run. Typically that's 90 PSI, but it depends from tool to tool.
CFM:
CFM stands for Cubic Feet Per Minute and it's a unit for measuring the rate of flow in or out of a space. In this case, the rate of flow of air out of your air compressor. Air tools typically require 4-6 CFM for proper operation.
Tank Size:
The tank size, measured in US gallons, tell you how much air is compressed and give you something of an idea of how long you can operate your air tool for at a time. The other factors that affect how long you can run your tool for are the PSI and HP of the engine itself as these factors determine how quickly your compressed air supply is replenished.
Now that you've got the very basics of Air Compressors, here are four questions that will help you make your decision
1) Who's Using the Air Compressor, and What For?
Is it you in your shop on weekends building birdhouses? Or is it for your construction company's framing up new houses? The level of use should be your first consideration when making a purchase and will help you determine how much of an investment really makes sense for your compressor. The aspects of the compressor you should be paying the most attention to here are PSI and horsepower. The higher these are the more power and continuous usage you'll get out of your compressor.
2) What Air Tools Do You Plan To Use?
Will you be using an impact wrench in an assembly line automotive project? Or are you using a brad nailer to finish up your wood shop projects? Again, the amount of usage you're applying to your tool is a key factor in determining the HP, PSI and CFM of your air compressor. Typically, for the wood shop owner, you're looking at using finish nailers, brad nailers and narrow-crown staplers for your projects.
3) Will You Be Using More than One Tool At A Time?
If you're running two tools at once from a single compressor then you will need to invest in a compressor with more HP, PSI and CFM. A larger tank size would be beneficial as well.
4) Will You Be Mobile or Stationary?
If you're stationary then you'll be fine with an electric powered air compressor. If not then you'll need a gas powered compressor that you can bring with you to your electricity-free work site.
Armed with the basics of compressor lingo - PSI, CFM, Tank Size and Horsepower you should be a formidable consumer when you go shopping for your next compressor. Be highly skeptical when talking with compressor salesmen as they often know very little about the units they sell and seek to razzle dazzle you with big talk that won't help you get the right compressor for your needs.
As always when choosing a new tool, know precisely how you plan to use it when making the purchase. Keeping this in mind will always lead you to the right tool for the job.
The Importance of Providing Positive Behavior Support (PBS) At School and at Home
Home and school should be a place where children are encouraged to grow academically and socially. Both places should pride themselves on providing the support that will prepare children to not only become contributing members of society, but future leaders as well.
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) refers to the application of positive behavioral interventions and systems to achieve socially important behavior change. PBS is the integration of defined and valued outcomes; behavioral and biomedical science; research-validated practices; and systems change to both enhance the broad quality with which all students are living/learning and reduce problem behaviors.
PBS was initially used approximately 20 years ago as an alternative to aversive interventions used with students with significant disabilities who engaged in extreme forms of self-injury and aggression. It has most recently been applied successfully with a wide range of students in a wide range of contexts, and extended from an intervention approach for individual students to an intervention approach for entire schools. Families are also taking advantage of the skills learned and applying them at home.
Teachers and parents all over the country are seeking skills assistance for behavior and classroom management. There are many competing social and behavioral factors that are affecting the learning process in each classroom and at home, making the job of actually teaching and parenting, a lot more difficult. With a higher number of diagnosed learning disabilities in the school population, it can create insurmountable odds in the face of increased academic and disciplinary accountability. PBS helps educators and parents to understand the critical practices and systems of positive behavior support. It is not a single theory, but a compilation of the best practices of proven strategies.
The PBS approach is founded on this science of human behavior. Key messages from behavioral science state that much of human behavior is learned; comes under the control of environmental factors; and can be changed. As problem behaviors become more understandable, so does one's ability to teach more socially appropriate and functional behavior. The process pays attention to important lifestyle results, works from a systems perspective, and gives priority to research-validated practices.
Behavior is a communication tool. It is used to tell another person what it is that we need. Maladaptive behavior is often used to communicate when a person lacks the skills for asking in adaptive ways or the adaptive way in which they communicated was ignored or not heard by others. The child who acts out in the supermarket and is rewarded with a lollipop because it is less embarrassing than yelling, will more than likely act out at the supermarket again in search of another lollipop. An important component of the PBS program at Vincent Smith School in Port Washington is the Self-Advocacy and Mentoring (SAM) Program which has been designed and implemented to allow students to develop the necessary skills for communication, self-advocacy, autonomy, and the ability to access needed services and support.
PBS does not attempt to address negative behavior as much as it attempts to reinforce positive behavior. Research has shown that students do not learn better ways of behaving when presented with aversive consequences for their problem behaviors. Addressing such behavior requires an increased emphasis on proactive approaches in which expected and more socially acceptable behaviors are directly taught, regularly practiced and followed by repetitive positive reinforcement. By doing so, schools can shift from reactive interventions to prevention efforts.
PBS is not a program that displays its full value overnight. Effective practices and systems of PBS must be sustained for several years to maximize its effectiveness. The program aims to assist local and state education agents in their efforts to improve school climate and positive behavior support for all students.
In its first full year at Vincent Smith, the program produced several student and staff successes: a leadership team was formed; staff and students on the elementary and middle school level took self-assessments on their teaching and learning styles; staff agreed to focus on teaching and reinforcing the six pillars of character development - trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship - with a special emphasis on respect; the leadership team designed a survey to measure student and teacher opinions; and everyone on campus participated in a school-wide project in celebration of Earth Month.
"Positive Behavior Support is not just about changing the climate, but the entire culture of the school and/or home," said Dr. Veronica McCue, Principal. "By doing so, children have taken a sense of ownership for their behavior and the environment around them. While they continue to receive external rewards, they are being guided on how to internalize those rewards into specific behaviors. Parents and educators are being challenged to produce global citizens in a world of contradictions."

Getting the Right Power Tools For Home Maintenance
If you own your own home there will be times where you need to make modifications or repairs to your property. Some jobs will simply be to small for calling out a trades person or you may be the type of person who prefers to fix it yourself where you can. As such, you need a few basic power tools on hand which can make repairing and improving your home a little easier. Some things you will need almost immediately, for example drills, as their versatility means that you will be using them in some capacity on most DIY tasks. Others such as circular saws can probably be left until you need them. Others still, such as multi-tools are completely optional.
Drills
First up is the drill. The most popular power tool, they are also the most versatile. With the right attachments and bits a drill can perform many secondary tasks in addition to drilling. With a sanding attachment the drill can be used as a power sander. While not as good as a dedicated power sander, it will be more than sufficient for most household tasks unless you intended to be doing a lot of wood working. Any drill with a reverse gear and variable speed is able act as a powered screwdriver which can drive a screw much deeper and tighter than you could by hand. A drill can be adapted to a number of other tasks in addition to those listed above.
If you intend to do any work on exterior walls then a drill with a hammer function is a must as this allows the drill to work on masonry. You will also need masonry drill bits which may need to be purchased separately from the drill. These are relatively inexpensive but necessary as standard wood working bits are unsuited to drilling into masonry and may snap or shatter potentially causing a hazard if the remains of the bit come flying out of the hole.
If you intend to do most of your work indoors than a less powerful drill with a driver function may be more suited as these are better at working as a power screwdriver.
There are also angle drills available which are suited to working in tight restricted locations such as under cupboards or near pipes and other obstacles. This is achieved by having the drill head at a 90 degree angle to the main body of the drill. They are lighter and smaller than standard drills making them more convenient for closed in work.
Which drill you need depends upon your circumstances and it may be a good idea to consider getting more than one drill for example an inexpensive hammer drill for doing any masonry work as they can be quite affordable with decent ones starting at around £30 and having a lighter angle drill with driver function for use in awkward places and for use as a powered screwdriver.
If you only have the budget or storage space for one drill then we would recommended a mid hammer drill with variable speed and reverse gear so it can still act as a powered screwdriver though not as efficiency as a drill with the driver function would.
Saws
If you need to do any wood repairs than a powered saw is a good thing to have there are three types of powered saw that can be useful in the home tool kit.
The first is the Jigsaw the smallest of the power saws which is great for working with light materials such as MDF or cutting through thin pieces of wood. They need to cut with the grain as they typically do not have sufficient power to work against the grain. They are however very good at cutting straight lines and are capable of cutting curves into the wood and cutting along a pattern a jigsaw should be on light woods and light materials they are light weight and the easiest of the saws to handle. The Jigsaw is intended to do fine detailed finishing work. It is a good tool to have around when you need to do general cutting on light woods.
Circular saws are much more heavy duty and can tackle very thick pieces of wood and can cut with or against the grain they are made to cut on flat surfaces and it is difficult to work with them when cutting at angles. They can take blades suitable for cutting metal. They are mainly used for cutting straight precise lines they can also cut wide curves but others saws a better at doing that type of work they are made for working on heavy materials.
Reciprocating saws are the most versatile of the saws they are able to cut wood, metals and other materials dependant upon which blades are used. It is designed for cutting curves in thick woods and materials. A Reciprocating saw is able to cut at any angle and is excellent at cutting curves and other patterns It is however difficult to cut straight lines with the Reciprocating saw so it is best to use it in combination with another saw when working on larger complex jobs such as preparing and cutting down to size items such as table tops for counters. The reciprocating saws ability to cut metals such as pipes makes it useful when working on tasks such as plumbing or car body work repair.
Probably the first saw to get would be the jigsaw for general work it is useful to have around the more heavy duty circular saw can be purchased as you are preparing to do heavier work. The reciprocating saw to is an optional choice to allow for more heavy duty general work you can get by without a reciprocating saw by using a combination of the circular saw and jigsaw but if you are going to be doing a lot of DIY projects that require cutting tools or you need to cut patterns into metals than a reciprocating saw will be useful and is worth considering if not the circular saw and jigsaw should be more than sufficient for most peoples needs.
Nailers
Nailers, or nail guns, are a useful but not essential tool to have in the home they can make jobs like putting up sheds or garden furniture much easier as they are able to drive nails into materials much deeper, more consistently and more secure than you could by hand. They allow for a much better build quality for your DIY projects they wont replace your hammer but it will make some projects quicker and easier. Some nailers also feature a stapler facility allowing it to act as a powered stapler allowing it even more versatility and usefulness.
Angle Grinders
Angle grinders feature a circular disk which can be used to cut through or grind down metals they are useful if you will be working with a lot of metal when used with a more precise cutter such as a reciprocating saw. Angle grinders can be used to cut and wear metals down to size as well as remove rust. Most of the time an angle grinder will not be needed unless you are intending to undertake major metal work projects such as car repair or are working with sheet metals. The angle grinder is a tool which should not be purchased till absolutely needed as it is pretty limited in its applications and is rarely needed in general DIY.
Multi-tools
Multi tools are small hand held precision tools that can be used for a wide verity of applications such as very light precision drilling, light sanding, light polishing and buffing of metals cutting of light metals such as copper piping as well as knife sharpening and with the right attachments engraving. Multi-tools are designed to be extremely versatile with many different attachments there are a large number of tasks the multi-tool can be adapted to as needed. The multi-tool is useful as both a DIY tool and also as a support for many hobbies such as those involving electronics, scaled metal work or miniature modelling for example.
Hot Air Guns
Hot air guns are primarily used for paint stripping and are mainly used in supporting decorating. They are able to make light work of all types and thickness of paint making its removal a much less time consuming chore allowing you to clean the surface quickly before applying new paint fresh without the previous coats of paint interfering with your current paint job. Hot air guns can also be used for other tasks thawing frozen pipes for example. If you intend to do a lot of decorating than a hot air gun will be very useful.
Steam wall paper strippers
Wall paper strippers are another labour saving device for decorating allowing the quick and efficient removal of all wall papers including those that feature heavy patterns. Because of the frequency that we redecorate our homes a wall paper stripper is one of the tools after the drill that we should not really be without as while its task can be completed by hand it is far more efficient to use a stripper than to perform the task by hand. As an added bonus wall paper strippers can be used to deep clean carpets and may be able to get some stains that refuse to come out using chemical cleaners.
So what do you need
On our list of tools the most essential objects are the basic drills, jigsaws and circular saws as well as wall paper strippers as these will allow you to get the most common DIY and decorating tasks done. Since decorating usually follows many major DIY projects, and is a DIY project in its own right, we thought it best to include them in our list of household tools. These basic tools can be purchased for as little as £100-150 if you go for the most basic models.
Other tools such like angle drills, reciprocating saws, multi-tools, hot air guns and nailers can be lived without, but make life much easier and it may be a good idea to consider adding at least some off them to your tool kit when you are able. Probably giving priority to the angle drill and reciprocating saw.
Finally some tools such as the angle grinder only really need purchasing when you absolutely need them of course if you find one in a set of tools that includes other things which you can use or you see a good deal don't let that put you off from buying it early.
Cordless or Corded
One more decision to be made before you purchase your power tools is do you want any of your tools to be cordless as all types of drills, saws, nailers and angle grinders have battery powered cordless versions available. The choice between cordless and corded is partly practical and partly personal. While cordless tools have less overall operating power than there corded counterparts the difference in modern cordless tools is not as big as it once was and a cordless power tool should be able to perform all of the tasks a corded tool is able to. Unless you absolutely need every last bit of operating power out of your drill the power difference should not be that much of an issue.
What is an issue is the advantages and disadvantages of each type of power supply. With a corded drill you have an unlimited run time provided you do not overheat the drill. However this is at the cost of having to stay within close proximity of a power socket and having a trailing power cord that can get in the way.
While cordless power tools can go anywhere and allow for a slightly more tidy working environment with more overall freedom of movement. The cost is that your working time is limited to the life of the battery which can be inconvenient if you do not prepare and plan for the option. One final problem is that rechargeable batteries do wear out eventually necessitating the purchasing of replacements as such it is recommended that you purchase cordless tools that come from a manufacturer that uses the same battery type consistently across its power tools range to ensure that even if you drill becomes discontinued your battery won't be.
If you do purchase a cordless tool it is recommended that you look for one that comes with 2 batteries to help with this problem if you cannot find a set that comes with a second battery you can always swap when one runs out and have it charge while you work so you always have a replacement when you need it. Additionally if you get more than one cordless tool from the manufacturer you will be able to have more batteries available for use helping alleviate the problem further. Provided of course that you follow our advice above and get your cordless power tools from a manufacturer that uses the same batteries across multiple product lines.
The real choice between cordless and corded drills is which is more important the ability to work for longer or the ability to work anywhere. This decision is partially made for you by the layout of the home if you have a home with good socket coverage and a small garden than corded power tools will be suitable. Where as if you have a large garden where you wish to work on a lot of garden furniture or you home has poor socket coverage than cordless tools will be suitable. Of course that is not the only factor in the decision as cordless tools can be more convenient due to the lack of wire.
One final thing to note is that there are cost differences such as typically cordless tools do cost more than corded tools as such price is a factor in the decision between corded and cordless tools. This is especially true if you wish to get a lot of tools at once you may find that it is better to make a compromise and get a mix of corded and cordless tools in order to ensure that you can get everything that you want/need
Look for the best deals
When shopping for your tools be sure to look around and consider what you get with the tool that you wish to purchase look for extras such as additional bits and pieces like extra blades/drill bits/attachments, carry cases, extra batteries in the case of cordless tools. Many of these extras can be very useful in your DIY tasks and can be good value for money over purchasing them separately.
Another value for money options looking for sets of power tools. Some stores offer many of there tools as part of bundles which are very good value for money containing two or three tools that compliment each other and give very good value for money. On most sets you can save at least 20-30% of the cost of buying the tools separately on larger sets you can save enough for multiple tools.

Wagner Paint Crew Plus with Roller
Ergonomically Correct Garden Tools - Your Back Will Thank You
In most endeavors, a person will opt for the easiest, most comfortable manner by which to accomplish his chosen task. An artist painting a magnificent sunset , shimmering delicately over a lake, will use the best quality artist's brush made of camel hair, not a house painter's 3" wide, synthetically bristled brush. In the kitchen, why chop vegetables until your hands are in considerable pain when there is a food processor waiting to do the job, freeing you from the tedium, and the additional back pain that comes from standing interminably at the kitchen counter, wondering to yourself if your recipe really needs a full cup of finely diced celery? And why would anybody use a manual typewriter that has absolutely no features to boast about, other than causing carpal tunnel syndrome or muscle spasms, that come from the repetitive motion of striking the keys with force when, in the other room, sits a state-of-the-art computer with all the bells and whistles, capable of doing practically everything for you but actually compose the text that you want? I do not think I could begin to be sufficiently proficient (more like bumbling) if I had to worry about setting margins and spacing, and trying to figure out where to put that *%@# "e" inadvertently missing in cheese [sic] without destroying any semblance to proper space placement.
The same thing is true with gardening. You do not use a shovel when a much lighter weight spade will do. And you do not spend an hour, bent over a flower bed, without causing grievous pain to your back and shoulders, when you could be using an ergonomically designed kneeler pad specifically crafted to keep your knees on speaking terms with the rest of your body.
Any gardener, beginner or professional, needs a basic set of tools. As is the case with any job or pastime requiring specialized tools or paraphernalia, to garden you must amass for yourself a set of good quality tools which will not fall apart with the slightest provocation. Plus, you owe it to yourself to obtain the most comfortable tools within your budget. It is better to buy just a few of the basics before you start salivating at the sight of "designer" garden tools. At this point, more is not necessarily better. Pick wisely.
The first category of ergonomically designed garden tools includes SPADES, TROWELS, CULTIVATORS, and SHOVELS. A SPADE is used for digging or cutting the ground. It has a sharp-edged metal blade and a long handle. A TROWEL is basically a small spade, used for lifting plants or soil. A CULTIVATOR is used to prepare the soil for a garden.
A STANDARD or GARDEN TROWEL, a very versatile hand tool, can do many jobs such as digging and shaping holes, hollowing or leveling out soil, and close-up weeding. A TRANSPLANTING TROWEL, with its narrow design, is the ideal tool for digging deep and/or narrow holes for planting seedlings. It is also excellent for removing root balls easily, with no damage to the plant or neighboring areas. Some transplanting trowels have measurements marked on the trowel so the gardener can dig to the correct depth for planting seeds. An extremely versatile tool, the CULTIVATOR , with its three elongated prongs, is perfect for many tasks. It can be used to loosen and prepare soil, extract immature weeds, amend the soil with compost or fertilizer, and to aerate the soil to make watering more efficient. A long-handled ROUND POINT SHOVEL can make or break your garden. You can accomplish anything and everything with this kind of shovel. It is ideal for turning ground or scooping soil, as well as for creating planting holes, filling in holes, and for carting away dirt loosened by another tool.
The next group of gardening tools includes PRUNERS, SHEARS, and LOPPERS. HAND PRUNERS are quite useful. They are perfectly suited for removing dead or damaged branches from rose bushes and shrubs, and they can cut through thin branches. Other uses can include cutting back perennials, and collecting herbs and flowers. I have found, from personal experience, to keep the blades clean and sharpened, or else you will find yourself with an armful of mangled rose stems, hanging half on and half off the bush. Not a pretty sight. I'm very territorial about my rose pruners and really do not like sharing them with others. If the pruner fits...
There are various styles of SHEARS available. Generally speaking, shears are large clipping or cutting instruments shaped like scissors. GRASS SHEARS are designed to get into areas difficult to be trimmed by the lawn mower, such as around tree trunks and flower beds, and to trim the lawn's edges. HEDGE SHEARS and grass shears are alike, but the hedge shears have longer blades. This tool is good when trimming hedges and shrubs. In the Fall, it comes in quite handy when cutting back perennials and also when clipping off dead flower heads.
LOPPERS have long handles in order to prune back or cut off branches from a tree or other such woody plants. They are able to cut through branches up to 2 inched in diameter.
Another important grouping of garden tools is made up of WEEDERS and EDGERS. WEEDERS do just that; they dig up weeds. A weeder consists of a long metal handle ending in finger like projections or scrapers that have been sharpened to facilitate piercing the earth and pulling up long, straggling weeds up and away by cutting them off below the surface. It rather looks like a BBQ fork. EDGERS are used to keep flower beds and bushes maintained in their proper contours. Basically, an edger will help delineate the garden borders by loosening up grass impinging onto sidewalks, stepping stones, flower beds, and around the circular space surrounding the diameter of a tree.
There are two basic types of RAKES: the BOW RAKE and the LEAF RAKE. The BOW RAKE is a basic in any garden. Solidly built with sturdy steel tines, it is used to move and smooth soil. It is also useful for drawing up raised flower or vegetable beds or mounding soil around plants. It is indispensable to "catch and toss" garden debris. LEAF RAKES have flexible plastic or aluminum tines. It is not as heavy as the bow rake but is perfect for gathering scattered leafs, grass clippings, and so forth. Both rakes have long handles so no bending is involved.
Do not forget to select a WATERING CAN, a HOSE with a HOSE REEL and NOZZLE, a ROLLING GARDEN CART/SEAT and a KNEELER. A WATERING CAN has a long spout, enabling you to water your flowers and shrubs from a short distance away while still standing. They do tend to feel quite heavy - water weighs 8-1/3 lbs. per gallon - so try to find a watering can that is made of lighter weight materials, such as aluminum or a sturdy plastic, that is well constructed. A good quality HOSE is essential for your garden and your sanity, unless you are particularly fond of lugging that heavy watering can around to water your lawn. Do not pinch pennies on a hose; buy the best quality hose you can find so you will not be spending your weekends giving first aid to all those holes and leaks that seem to announce themselves the minute you look away. A hose made of rubber should be your best bet. Some are even reinforced from the inside with a material meant to flex with the hose. You will need a NOZZLE of plastic or metal; metal will definitely last longer and frustrate you less. A HOSE REEL will make your life so much simpler. How many times have you tripped over a hose that has been carelessly dropped in serpentine tangles all over the driveway? Try to buy a hose that is of sufficient length to reach from the spigot to the point furthest away on your property where you might need water.
Last, but certainly not least, are the GARDENING STOOL and the KNEELER. These two accessories are designed for those of us who are not quite as mobile as we once were. The GARDENING STOOL helps eliminate back and knee pain by providing a surface upon which to sit while doing gardening chores that generally require standing in one place and/or bending. The stool usually is equipped with wheels and a storage space for your tools, and even has a holder for your water bottle. There is another type of gardening stool resembling a round hassock but it is mounted on a spring mechanism that allows the gardener to sit and reach in all directions without having to get up to reposition the stool. Unfortunately, this second type of stool tends to be very expensive.
The KNEELER, a padded surface in the shape of a rigid swing seat, is designed to take the ground's hardness away from your poor aching knees. A variation of the kneeler is as described above but with grab bars on either side of the cushion to facilitate standing up when you have finished working in that part of your garden. Both models ease pressure on the knees, especially helpful for arthritics.
Probably one of the most effective items, ergonomically speaking, is the ADD-ON HANDLE. It structurally modifies conventionally designed garden tools in a manner that gives the tool an ergonomic grip. It can be used with hand tools such as trowels and spades, rakes, hoes, and brooms. An arm support cuff for increased control and leverage is also available. Both the handle and the cuff are removable and can be used on the tools mentioned above. There are also long reach cultivators for those who must work from a seated position, particularly wheelchair users.
A few final thoughts:
You must treat your body as a shrine. Bending incorrectly is the same as taking a sledge hammer to your shrine. Both are destructive.
It is easy to make a quick move without thinking. I cannot count the number of times my doctor has fussed at me for just that reason.
When RAKING or HOEING, try to keep the tools close to your body. Keep your back straight. Use your arms and NEVER twist your trunk (my doctor's very bone of contention - I still feel guilty when he catches me). If you are short, use long-handled tools in scale with your height. The same is true for tall individuals.
Do not consider bending from the waist. This is where the KNEELER or the KNEELER WITH GRAB BARS come in mighty handy. When WEEDING, use long-handled tools to ease the strain on your back, legs, and knees. Forget about bending over to TROWEL; consider squatting or sitting on the ground.
When SHOVELING or DIGGING, step on the top of the blade as you vertically insert the head of the shovel in the ground. Lift only small loads, bending at the knees. Never involve your back when lifting. Again, avoid twisting your trunk. This will become your mantra. Use as small of a shovel as possible to adequately complete your task. Again, match your shovel to your body size.
Do not push your physical limits when lifting or carrying. Bend from the knees, but not your back and keep the load close to your body. Avoid twisting or reaching. Sound familiar?
Get as close as possible to your work. Do not force your reach beyond your comfort zone. More importantly, do not stretch beyond your stable footing! On a personal note, stretching can be deleterious to your health if you have not arranged your footing to your best advantage. To preface this cautionary tale, due to having Degenerative Disc Disease for many years, my chief mode of transportation is my trusty wheelchair. I also wear bilateral leg braces which give me some support when standing. A few summers ago, I thought it would be nice to raid my rose garden to dress up the dining room table as we were expecting dinner guests that evening. Nobody else was at home.
Like a fool, I went out to my rose garden, armed with my favorite pruning shears, thinking I would like to cut at least a dozen beautiful roses (we have over 50 bushes). I was wearing rather baggy shorts that billowed in the breeze. Both my legs were ensconced in their braces. Espying a particularly delightful rose, I reached forward toward the bush. I thought my feet were firmly planted atop the redwood chips surrounding the bushes. Boy, was I wrong! As I reached for the stem to be clipped, each foot went in an opposite direction, propelling me toward all those thousands of deadly thorns. With extreme accuracy, I was thrust directly onto the bush. Correction. I was impaled upon the rose bush, imprisoned by those menacing thorns in a bent-over, face-in-the-bush position. Doomed by my thorn-snagged shorts, I was literally immobilized. My neighbor and his brother came trotting across the street to untangle me. Talk about humiliation, not to mention the blood oozing out from the zillion thorn holes on my body. I was the picture of sophistication, not. I thanked them for their help and red-facedly slunk back into the house. I can honestly say that from that point on, I stop to consider all options before even approaching anything in my garden. I had definitely learned my lesson and hope this tale will remind you to plan ahead whenever your body mechanics are involved.
By the way, I never did get the roses cut for that evening. Sigh...

Work At Home Moms Enjoy Family and Career
The industrial revolution and feminist movement saw many changes in the work place. Women left the home to work along side men. Women fought for equal rights and equal salaries. Now, however, some women want to also enjoy their role as a mother during the fleeting years of their children's youth. For decades, a woman has had to choose a satisfying career or a family, and often the choices did not coincide gracefully.
Gone are the days, though, when a woman had to kiss her family life goodbye in pursuit of a career. Thanks to online businesses and at home marketing schemes, women can be successful bread winners and still witness the first steps, ballet classes, and play groups that ask for so short a period of time.
Work at home moms have a lot of resources at their disposal. The Internet is the number one most effective tool for work at home moms. Successful women who work from home know how to utilize the Internet and make it work for them.
The Internet provides a source of communication and networking to stay at home moms. This tool connects them and offers them a forum in which to discuss their challenges and struggles, as well as to offer one another support and helpful ideas.
The Internet is also a source of business. This virtual community is a marketplace where the exchange of information and ideas is also the exchange of money. Work at home moms often run their own Internet businesses, maintaining their web pages and providing a variety of services and functions.
Programs such as affiliate programs make this avenue even more lucrative because a stay at home mom can earn two incomes: the first from her web site and the products or services she sells, and the second by providing a link to an affiliate's web site. The affiliate pays the site owner each time someone visits their site from the owner's link.
This program requires little maintenance, little initial effort, and provides continual income. Marketing opportunities also present mothers with ample chances to make money and succeed in business. These ventures require an outgoing personality and ability to look at a stranger and see a potential client. Mothers with these skills can effectively market for other people, make money when they bring new marketers into the corporation, and benefit from the connection they have to the world outside their home.
Work at home moms have the best of both worlds. They are able to be with their families and enjoy their time as a mother to the fullest. They are able to succeed in business and challenge their minds to grow and expand with knowledge. They are strong women with heart, who have the courage to demand that all of their heart's desires be met. These women refuse to just be one thing, but know they can be anything and succeed at everything.

Air Hammers - Pneumatic Tools Working at Thousand Times Per Second
Air hammers work on the principle of using pressurized air that helps the hammer to delve deeper into any surface. It can blow its impact on any surface at the rate of thousand times per second. It comes under the category of pneumatic tools, as it uses compressed air to for its working.
Air hammers are available in various sizes ranging from something as small as a hair dryer and as big as a computer monitor. The cost of Air hammers also varies depending on the size of the tool.
It is very important to keep the safety precautions in mind and read the instruction manual carefully before using air hammers, as being an electrical device, there is risk involved.
Air hammers are often used to:
Shape a surface
Smoothen a surface
Dig holes
Cut through surfaces
The air hammers use different types of tips (heads) for the various purposes mentioned above. For example a drill tip is used for boring holes whereas a chisel tip is used for cutting through surfaces.
Before buying any power tool, there are certain key factors that you have to keep in mind. When you go shopping for air hammers, please look for the following things:
Size ad weight: It should be neither very heavy as it will make the task very cumbersome nor very light as it will not be able to perform the task effectively.
Cost effectiveness: The cost of the air hammer should fulfill your requirement under a given budget.
No. of blows per minute: The efficiency of the tool will depend upon the capability of the tool.
The types and number of tips (heads): Different types of tips and bits to perform various functions.
The product code: To authenticate product validity
The consumption of air: Being a pneumatic device, this is a must check.
The pressure at which the tool operates: Air pressure needs to be checked to help the device perform efficiently.
The air hammers are indeed technological advancements that have made working on metals easier for the craftsmen, as they need not heat the metals on very high temperatures as done in traditional settings. Moreover, this provides a safer work environment for the craftsmen.

Basic Necessities in Home Organization Tools
When you are looking for the perfect home organization tools to fit your needs, there are definitely a few basic tools that you need to have. These are some basic tools that I recommend for anyone who wants to get an organized home.
Clear plastic stackable shoe boxes. These are versatile, inexpensive and can be used in just about every room in the home for almost anything imaginable. I have used them in the kitchen for granola bars, in the garage for rags, in the bedroom for accessories and in the bathroom for organizing under the sink. These home organization tools are a great storage tools that fits neatly on shelves and is absolutely great for effectively using that huge storage space under bathroom sinks. And they are really great if you are on a budget because you can get these inexpensive home organization tools for a few dollars at many major retail stores.
A desktop filer. These are great home organization tools, especially for incoming mail and paper. We all have a lot of paper coming into our homes on a daily basis. Mail, schoolwork, magazines, receipts. A desktop filer or two is a great way to get all of that paper organized. I have one for all of the mail that comes into my home. The action items go in the first slot (bills and mail that requires an immediate response from me), mail that needs a response but not an immediate one goes in the second slot (letters from friends and family) and mail that I need to review (magazines and information items) goes in the third slot. If you have kids, having them organize their schoolwork in this way might work for them.
Large clear plastic stackable boxes or labeled stackable boxes. Let's face it, all of us have "stuff" that we need to store somehow. Memory boxes, boxes with hobby materials, those "someday" projects that we cannot seem to quite let go of yet. The best home organization tools for this job are clear plastic stackable boxes so that you can easily see at a glance what is in them and so that you can easily stack them for the best use of your storage space. The second best option is labeled stackable boxes. When you label them, just be sure that you will be able to see the label. If you are not sure how the boxes are going to end up being stored, it would be best to label every side, that way you will know what is in the box no matter how it might end up getting put into your storage space.

Deciding To Be A Stay at Home Mom - Secrets They Don't Want You To Know!
This heated issue has been heavily debated for almost 30 years. It seems to be one of those die hard controversies that remains reported as "unsolved.". Have you noticed that? Whether you call yourself a feminist, a non-feminist or have completely avoided that label, deciding to be a stay at home mom may be more black and white than what you think!
As a Stay at Home Mom of 10 years I can speak from experience. It was just over a decade ago that I walked away from an executive level position with a $52k+ salary, a car, expense account and cell phone. It wasn't easy! Especially since my husband only made $14K more than I did at the time. We were truly losing almost half of our income.
The catalyst to this decision was when we determined that our son was just not thriving in his daycare situation. Now believe me, we paid top dollar, had the best references etc. But still, it wasn't working.
I had grappled with the decision to be a stay at home mom during my family leave of three months. I can still remember the first day I went back to work, leaving my then 4 month old in the care of someone else. I spent as much time as I could hiding out in the women's restroom crying. After Fighting back tears and forcing myself to be stoic, I settled into my corporate routine and bought into the whole "your son is better off with you working, you don't want to give up your career that you've worked so hard for, you'll never make it financially without your income thing!." What a bunch of Hype!
The truth of the matter is this, no child is better off in the care of someone else unless their parents are unfit. (that's a whole other issue). No one has your child's best interest at heart the way you do, period. You can't buy that kind of investment. I could go on and on about this, but why? It's a simple truth, unfortunately some still refuse to accept it by coming out with studies, statistics and opinions that are nothing more than platitudes for justifying greed or self indulgence.
Before we go any further, let me clarify something. The scenario that I am speaking about is a Married Couple both working out of the Home and filing jointly on their tax returns.
Do you fit this bill? Then sit down, because you are about to be shocked!
If you want to find out just how much your wages as a 2ND income worker are affecting your family's finances, check out this free tool The MSN Second Income Calculator.

You Can't Train Your Dog Without These 3 Tools - Do Not Begin Training Without Them!
Maybe you are thinking that the necessary tools for training can be bought at your local pet store. Well there are some good tools that you can purchase at the pet store, but the tools I am talking about are not for your dog, but tools every successful dog trainer must have.
Let's look at each of these 3 tools.
1. CALMNESS. The reason I suggest calmness first is that it is the trainer's most necessary tool. Nervousness, quick tempers, or the slightest impatience will never mix well with successful dog training. There will be times when you will be tempted to yell or scream or pull your hair out! Dog training is very difficult and requires a calm and gentle spirit on the part of the dog trainer. If you do not possess these qualities, then you should leave dog training to someone else.
2. UNDIVIDED ATTENTION. Can you drive a car and read a newspaper at the same time? No one in the world can divide their attention between these two activities and live to tell about it. Neither can anyone train a dog and carry on a conversation at the same time. Any time that a dog senses a trainer's divided attention, he will begin to see what he can get away with. And a distracted trainer will never be able to pick up on mistakes of his trainee, and therefore will never see the correct results. Many people who attempt to train a dog and have divided attention, end up blaming the dog, or the circumstances, or the bystanders. So if you want a well trained dog, you must develop the ability to concentrate on the task at hand and ignore what is going on around you.
3. DETERMINATION. Ask yourself whether you are really determined to train your dog. Do you have the desire to see this dog become a well behaved animal? Or is he going to be a spoiled brat, inclined to destructiveness; brutal with people, an annoying barker, constantly getting on other people's nerves. In other words, being a real nuisance! Once you have decided to train your dog, you must develop the quality of seriousness of purpose and realize that no matter what, you will stick to the task at hand and train your dog to be the obedient, well behaved companion you really desire.
What we are talking about here is sacrifice. Dog training requires many sacrifices, but the sacrifices you are required to make are so worthwhile. Consider this. In addition to the pleasure that comes from having a dog that is obedient and a true companion, you will discover that your dog will be admired and respected by your friends and neighbors because he is so well behaved. And if you are interested enough to continue on with your training, who knows but that this dog of yours may someday prove to be a real hero and get recognition because of his advanced training to rescue others.
The patient training of a dog by his master is a worthy and satisfying work which does not just benefit the dog but also reflects credit upon him and upon his owner. And what we are talking about is a commitment to a mere 15 to 30 minutes a day!

Advice on Finding the Best Woodworking Tools
Finding the best woodworking tools is a mixture of personal preference and advice. What may be best for one person could not be the best for another person. So, the only way to find the best tools is to look at what the experts say and then use your own opinion to make the final choice.
Choosing by Name
Brand name products get the most recognition because they are more advertised and professionals back them due to agreements with the company. However, there may be some good reasons they are well known, too. Popular brands like Sears Craftsman, Rockwell, Hitachi and Rigid are usually name people are familiar with. They are readily available and names out in the pubic eye. They are usually pricey, though. However, they are well made and do a good job. In contrast there are discount brands that may not be as well known, but that cost less. The risk with buying such tools, though, is the difference in quality. With tools you tend to get what you pay for, so when you pay less you get less quality.
What you Need
When you are out buying tools it helps to know what you need. The well stocked workshop should have the basic tools - a table saw, sanders, wood glue, finishing nails, hammers, a drill, a driver and bits, chisels and various woodworking tools such as a miter saw and router. Additionally, cordless tools are a great thing to have. Cordless tools are now built to be very long lasting with batteries that can go quite some time without charging. Some cordless tools to have are drills, hammers, driver and lights. Lastly, it helps to keep the shop tidy when you have a shop vac. When well stocked your shop should have every tool you will need for any project.
How to Afford It
You may be wondering how you can afford to stock your workshop if brand name tools for woodcrafting, which are quite costly, are the best investment. Well, the way to do it is to buy a little at a time. Buy a tool whenever you have extra money to do so. You can also ask for tools as gifts. Without being pushy, simply suggest the exact tool you want, including the brand name. In the end you will be glad that you did not just go buy any old tools, but took the time to get the quality tools.

Removing Mold and Their Spores From Your Home
During disasters, such as flood and fire, mold can destroy the houses
completely. The molds are found growing in damp and dark places of homes. The
growth of the mold proves harmful not only for family but for your dwelling
place too.
It has been seen that a few species of molds are harmless but some of them
might act as venom for the members of your family. For individuals who are
suffering from some kind of allergy, mold can further aggravate their condition.
A wide array of reasons can cause the growth of the mold; some of the reasons
comprise water leakage, floods and high levels of humidity. In case a person
notices mildewed stench at his dwelling or some member of the family is
suffering from mold toxin symptoms of allergy and sinus then presence of mold
should be checked.
Mold belongs to the fungi animal kingdom and as any other fungi feed on dead
and decaying matter to obtain their nutrients. This feeding process is called
fermentation which leads to the release of organic compounds in the air. These
organic compounds results in mildewed stench that is often associated with mold
toxin symptom, such as allergic reactions, which are inhaled by the organisms.
This mold toxin induces symptoms that comprise headaches, dizziness and fever.
To prevent mold it is necessary to take professional help because mold
releases mold spores that can intensify health problems. Proper knowledge and
methods are very essential in order to prevent mold.
For the growth of mold spores into spores, it requires nutrients, time and
moisture. Cellulose aids in the growth of mold spores into molds. The growth of
mold begins from 22 hours to 10 days with the aid of enhancing conditions. The
moisture plays a crucial role in commencing the process of decay.
Proper ventilation and lack of humidity in houses can act as mold preventers.
The stirring wind acts as a mold preventers as it has effect of dehydrating by
reducing the humidity.
For killing or ceasing the growth of mold spores, it is essential to take steps
for the prevention of mold from spreading from one area to other in the house.
The dust should be minimized while cleaning or killing the mold spores, as it
enhances the growth by stirring it. Dust in the air serves as a chief means of
mold spores transportation.
The mold and the materials infested with molds should be properly and discarded
into plastic bags that are heavy duty. But for preventing the mold growth, the
bags should not be transported from one area to the other. This will avoid
regeneration and scattering of mold. For cleaning or killing the mold, the rooms
should be cleaned separately.
After removing the moisture, clean the mold by applying soap for removing the
molds followed by a disinfectant for killing the mold spores. The surface should
be cleaned properly as the mold spores are very minute and can spread easily
through the environment.

Weeding Tools, Tips and Techniques That Work
Weeding tools are one piece of the solution. It's no secret that weeding consistently ranks as most individual's most unpopular gardening chore. But there is some good news in the battle over weeds: Homeowners tired of spending backbreaking hours in the yard pulling dandelions can rest a little easier thanks to proven procedures, clever tips and innovative weeding tools. Here are some pieces of advice from garden and lawn experts designed to make weed removal and prevention less of a problem, including:
Build up the lawn. Cultivating a strong lawn is one of the simplest ways to force out weeds. Dandelions and other common broadleaf weeds can't keep up with vigorously growing grass plants. The healthier and more lush your grass is, the less room there is for weeds.
Develop the soil. Conditioning the dirt is an easy way to cut down on weeds -- and make the ones that do sprout up easier to pull. Using peat moss is a very effective technique of getting the soil into shape. Sprinkle a layer of peat moss over the lawn and lightly spread it around with a rake. This procedure, called "top dressing," slowly conditions the lawn over the duration of a season so it's more resistant to thatch and disease - and helps keep weeds from growing. Peat moss also reduces the amount of fertilizer and water a lawn requires. It is also an effective addition to the garden. Till two inches of peat moss into the top half a foot of dirt to help loosen the soil and make it easier to pull weeds.
Aerate. Many weeds grow after the dirt has gotten compacted. You easily can reduce the probability of weeds taking over a compacted area by using an aerator, a garden tool that removes small plugs out of the ground and allows water and air to reach grass roots in frequently walk on areas. If you've got a big yard, think about renting a power aerator. They are often expensive, though, so it might be cheaper to gather a group of neighbors to rent one together. For small garden or isolated problem areas, hand operated aerator that removes plugs as you step is a good selection.
Be aware of timing. Go after weeds early in the season before they can have a chance to get to seeding and spread through a wider area. And removing weeds in late fall is a great way to get a jumpstart on spring yard care. Autumn weeds are more vulnerable as they store up nutrients for the winter.
Wait until it's wet. Pull weeds after the soil is damp Don't bother trying to yank weeds out of dry turf. It is much easier to pull weeds after a light rain, when the dirt is moist.
Choose ergonomic weeding tools. Manufacturers are developing ergonomic, stand-up weeding tools that don't put stress or strain on the body. One tool we especially like is the Rocket Weeder (www.yardbutlerstore.com), which will let you extract weeds while standing upright. You just step down on the foot pedal, tilt the tool and out comes the weed, root and all. Then press a button to expel the weed, and move onto the next one. It's actually fun to use, and you will be able to use it to pull dozens or even hundreds of weeds without much effort at all. Multi-use garden tools like a Rotary Cultivator or Twist Tiller will also be good additions to your arsenal in the war against weeds.
Get the roots. Whichever technique you use to pull weeds, make sure to get out every last bit of root, or you'll run the risk of having the backyard pest grow back even stronger than before.

4 Tricks To Remove Urine From A Mattress
Unfortunately, a urine stained mattress is not an uncommon sight. Young children and pets often have accidents in the most inconvenient places imaginable, and those accidents can leave behind unsightly stains and unpleasant smells.
Urine on a Mattress
Most parents and pet owners have at one time or another been faced with the unpleasant task of trying to remove urine from a mattress. It's important to keep in mind that actually cleaning the urine stain is important. Since bacteria is found in urine, leaving a stain untreated for an extended period can result in the growth of fungus and mold in the mattress. In some cases, this can completely ruin a mattress.
Tips & Tricks to Remove Urine from a Mattress
While some products sold commercially are designed for removing urine smells from most furniture, there are several household tips and products that can work just as effectively as those expensive sprays and products.
1. Vinegar:
Many parents and pet owners report that vinegar works wonders in removing the smell of urine from a mattress. Pour a moderate amount of vinegar on the soiled area, and absorb excess liquid with a large towel or wet vacuum. Keep in mind that this method is designed to remove the smell and kill bacteria, so spot treating the actual stain will be necessary to lift or fade the urine stain.
2. Alcohol:
Rubbing alcohol and other grain alcohols often have the same effect as vinegar. Like vinegar, though, alcohol may not remove the stain, so other methods for stain fighting should be used.
3. Shampoo:
Liquid Laundry Detergent: For new urine stains, many mattress owners have found that simply using detergent or shampoo and a small amount of water will remove the stain. This is often less effective for stains that have set for some period of time, and may not be completely effective in removing the smells.
4. Steam Cleaning:
Whenever possible, consider using a hot steam cleaner on mattresses with urine stains. Used with a cleansing agent, steam cleaning is usually quite effective at removing the physical stain, eliminating the smell of urine, and killing bacteria that may otherwise grow and spread.
