Laying Ceramic Tile - Top 5 Laying Tile Tools Used By The Pro's

Being a professional part time ceramic tile installer for several years, I have learned that there are 5 top tools every professional needs for laying tile. If you're thinking of laying tile for yourself here's a list of the top 5 tools you should use to do the job like a pro;

1. You need a Tile Saw. A tile saw is a special tool that is made to cut tile. Without a tile saw you can't do the job right. Borrow one from a friend or rent one from your local hardware store.

2. A knotched Trowel. A knotched trowel is a tool that is used to lay down the setting material for flooring. It looks a little like a rake. My personal favorite for the beginners and do it yourselfer is the super easy to use and do it right the first time trowel the UltraSpreader. You can find out more about the UltraSpreader online.

3. Tape Measure, just a regular construction tape measure from your local hardware store will do.

4. 2 Sponges. These are large, orange tile sponges that can be purchased at your local hardware store. Just ask for tile sponges. You will need one to wipe off extra grout. The second sponge is for a final clean up of the tile and grout after it is all grouted.

If you don't use two sponges, in two seperate buckets of water, then the grout area will never look clean.

5. An Angle Buster. The anglebuster tile and flooring tool is an easy to use tool that makes cutting angles as simple as laying the tool against the angle, setting it in place, then laying the tool right onto the tile for a perfect cut the first time.

This tool is excellent for do it yourselfers and novices because it makes cutting tough angles very simple and saves you from wasting tile by cutting it wrong again and again. Even professionals use this tool to save time and tile. The anglebuster tool can be found at HomeDepot or online.

With these five tools you can pretty much handle the job.

I can list a lot of other small items you need, like a pencil, level, rags, hammer, buckets, etc. But the top 5 tile laying tools listed above are an absolute must for a job done right. If you want a professional looking job, even if you're a novice, put these tile laying tools on the top of your list of things to buy. Two of my favorite places to go for easy to understand tile laying instructions is;

http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=770030566&channel=769302578. This shows a
small Video on what tools you need and how to lay the tile.

Series: How to Use a Tile Saw

Expertise: He has owned and operated several finish construction businesses, and has installed ceramic tile professionally for ten years. http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/tile-saw-tools.htm. This video will show you how to use a tile saw, for those that think they can't use one or are scared to try.

The goal is to make this as easy as possible on how to install tile. Just remember that Having the right tools when you start the job or project will make it go a lot smoother and result in a more professional looking tile job.

Your Homeschool Planner - How to Use it As a Home Organization Tool

How can a Homeschool Planner help you?

Many homeschool families would agree that being organized will help to determine the peacefulness and smooth running of a home. Whilst not all things are under our control, actively putting routines and systems in place help us prioritize our lives and pursue our goals.

The first three habits which Stephen Covey addresses in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", are

Be Proactive
Begin with the end in mind
Put First Things First
Although I will not be addressing these habits in detail, it is amazing how a Homeschool Planner allows you to puts these habits into action.

Proactive people will use their initiative to find solutions and methods to solve problems. They respond positively to the situations they are in, use the situations to build character and actively seek to work on a solution. Being proactive as a homeschooling family is to address the foreseeable problem of having a bunch of unruly, bored children in your home with you for 24 hours a day. A reactive person would tend to accept the situation, believing there is nothing they can do about it, and in fact become passive and do nothing.

The second habit of beginning with the end in mind, is also another favorite of my homeschool and life philosophy. When a person knows where they are headed and what long term goals they are pursuing, it is much easier to keep focused. The homeschooling family should have an idea of where they want to lead their children - making it easier to develop short term (yearly, term by term) goals once the long term (big picture) goals have been discussed and agreed upon.

Once you have the end in mind, it is easier to prioritize in your life and Put First Things First.

So, how does a Homeschool Planner help the homeschooling family become more effective?

A Homeschool Planner is as unique as each family. It is not a strict 15 minute timetabled account of a homeschooling family, driven by a over-conscientious mother. It is a written expression which reflects your home. Whether you homeschool by a schedule, in unit studies, in a natural learning approach, using your own eclectic family philosophy, it is a place which allows you to journal, record experiences, add comments, write in assignment charts, keep track of personal and family events, as well as helping you run your household in regards to chores, menus and groceries. A Homeschool Planner can be as simple as your require. But, I believe that the time you spend now in organizing your own Homeschool Planner will be the time you save every week the whole year through.

A Homeschool Planner is a place where you can begin to write your goals. It is also a place where you can organize parts of your daily household and homeschooling life to reflect the big picture goals and the priorities. Speaking from my own personal experience, I need to write down my thoughts and allocate space in my day to enable myself to keep my priorities in balance.

If you already have a Planner, here are some steps to guide you in using your planner.

Use It! Get into the habit of using your planner on a daily basis. Add information to your monthly calendar to see the month-at-a-glance.
Choose a day (Friday or Saturday) on which you organize the following week and do this every week:

Weekly Appointments Page.
Open to the Weekly Appointment Page of your planner. What week are you in? - for cleaning zones and meals? Enter the Zone area to the block at the top of the Weekly Appointment Page.- e.g. Zone: Bathroom, Laundry, Outdoor;
Add the date to the top of the Weekly Appointments Page.
Refer to your Weekly Meal Chart and add the meals to the Menu Column on your page.
Print out your grocery list or bring your planner with you shopping for that week's menus.

Add to the To Do List as something important comes to mind.
Add any appointments (doctors, sports, music lessons etc) to the week - check your monthly calendar.

Weekly Assignment Charts
Sit in a place where you can access all the children's books or curriculum which you use.
Fill in the weekly assignment chart for each child. List pages of workbooks/ reading assignments/ activities/ topic being studied and so on.
If your children are marking off their work in your planner, explain how the planner works and where you want them to tick off their work. Some planners have a small box on the side for this. You may want them to check it off or colour in the box when work is completed.
Photocopy the weekly assignment chart for each child if you want them to work off and mark their own copy.

Journal and Comments Page
Add to your journal and comments page as needed. Remember this is a good way to keep a family learning diary; It helps you to record the strengths and weaknesses of each child and allows you to plan what you may concentrate on
in the months to come.

Other pages you may like to include in your planner are Goal Pages/ Address Lists / To Do Pages and Monthly and Yearly Calendars.

A Homeschool Planner should be as complete as possible, to eliminate the need for other diaries and organizers. It should be a tool for you to help you prioritize your life and pursue your homeschooling goals.

The Perfect Tool For All Your Do-It-Yourself Projects

I am one of those arts and crafts types of people. This tends to mean if I need something done around the house including repairs, I like to do them myself. My husband says I go a bit over the top sometimes, but he does like tools and I found one that we both fell in love with. I don't usually buy the tools around the house but we are both glad that I bought this one.

The Rockwell Sonicrafter Deluxe can complete so many jobs it's almost unbelievable. I had an old chair from my mother's side of the family that needed repaired and I didn't want to just throw it away. This tool was perfect for fixing my chair. I could cut wood, sand it down to perfect smoothness and even polish it to make it look like new. My husband was surprised at how easy this tool was to use.

The 72-piece multipurpose kit comes with a variable speed tool and includes two cutting blades, a carbide grit blade, a finger-sanding pad, 30 finger sanding sheets, a triangular sanding pad and 30 triangular sanding sheets. It also includes two polishing pads that help you achieve professional-grade results. A tough, broad-spectrum scraper, a triangular carbide grit rasp, a vacuum adaptor and a hex key are also included. I'm telling you this is an awesome tool for anyone who is a do-it-yourself kind of person. It has just about everything you could possibly need.

My husband has started to remodel the bathroom as well and though he hasn't quite finished it yet, the Rockwell Sonicrafter is making it easier than he thought it possible. It can cut the tile from the wall and the floor without worrying about hurting his hands. The grips on the sides of the handle keep it from slipping out of his hands and make this tool very safe to use.

Seriously, I would recommend this to any do-it-yourself enthusiast. This is one tool that helps give you a professional touch to at-home jobs.

Picking a Portable Air Compressor

There are a number of different types of portable compressors available that vary in size and power level. The one you purchase will be determined by the tools you will use. Follow the power requirements of the tools you have and make sure you get a model that can run the strongest tool you own.

You should choose slightly more power than you actually need to make sure you will have enough power for any job.
One of the most important considerations when using a compressor is safety. Make sure you wear safety goggles when you operate any tool, along with protective clothing, including long pants, long sleeved shirts and safety shoes such as work boots or heavy, not thin sneakers.

The most common portable air compressor is the portable rotary screw compressor. They rang from 65 to 1600 cubic feet per minute, with a pressure rating from 100 to 350 psi (pounds per square inch). Determine which kinds of tools you use. A professional contractor, for example, would probably require 185 CFM, so that he could run two power tools at once and could use it for both light and heavy duty tools.

Truck mounted compressors are popular and can be mounted in the bed of a truck or under the hood, to save space. A truck mounted compressor will use the engine of the truck to generate the power, which will keep maintenance easier.
However, you have to run the truck in order to use the compressor.

A deck mounted compressor is mounted in the bed of a truck and can be removed from the truck and left on site, instead of setting it up each day. Since they have an engine of their own, they do not rely on the power from your truck. You will fuel them separately and give them the separate required maintenance.

There are electrically powered compressors and gas powered compressors. In both types, air is stored in a holding tank. You attach the tool to be powered with a hose and check the pressure, which is regulated by a valve, on the gauges on the compressor. One of the best brands of compressors in the Quincy brand. They carry rotary screw compressors that range in size from 10 to 350 horsepower. Quincy machines are notable for their reliability, durability and quietness. They come in all tank size models from small to larger models in a stationary cabinet.

Husky air compressors are another popular model, typically for home use. To run household tools such as sprayer, nail guns and spraying insulation, the 1.75 gallon tank, 135 PSI unit is recommended. It is convenient, portable and has a telescoping handle. For easy maintenance, it has an oil free pump. Another model is the 4 gallon, 125 PSI model, perfect for small tools, inflating tires or other recreational items. This is ideal for around the home use or a small wood shop.

How Home DNA Testing Works

DNA testing is used for a multitude of things in the world of investigation and it used to mean going to a doctor's office and airing your dirty laundry for all to see; but that has all changed with the advent of home DNA testing. Home DNA testing is a great way to determine paternity or if you are predisposed to certain genetic conditions. So why use home DNA testing?

Sometimes it is necessary to find out if you are or are not the father of a child. This may be something that needs to be done legally through the courts and in this case you usually have to go to a doctor's office to make it official. But if you just want peace of mind, you can use a home paternity DNA testing kit and find out for sure in a few short days.

Likewise you may want to know if you are predisposed to a number of genetic diseases as knowing can help you to understand what you can and cannot do in order to try to avoid what you may be predisposed to. You could go to a doctor's office and wait in the waiting room and then wait a number of days or weeks for the results, or you can use a home DNA test and get the results yourself and the best part is you do it when you want to.

While DNA is complicated, conducting your own DNA test at home is not. Here is how most home DNA testing kits work:

o Get a sample of your DNA: Collecting a sample of your DNA is as simple as using a swab and rubbing the inside of your cheek. The swab will come in the kit and will resemble a big Q-Tip. If you are conducting a paternity test you will also get a seperate sample swabbing of the infant in question.

o Send in your samples: Once you have swabbed the subjects that are to be tested, you then place the samples in the sealable bags that are also included in the kit and then pack those away in the provided envelope and mail them away. The lab will then take the sample or samples provided and run the appropriate tests.

o Get your results: Results can be had in as little as a couple of days and it is your choice whether to receive the results by phone, mail, or e-mail.

Now you may be thinking that a home DNA testing kit is not going to be very accurate, but you will in fact be thinking wrong. Most home testing kits will deliver results that are well over 99 percent accurate. Really with all the advances in technology today, the results are as good as or better than the tests conducted at your doctor's office.

While the privacy is a welcomed feature with home DNA testing kits, the icing on the cake is the price. You can conduct your own home DNA test for a fraction of what it would cost you at the doctor's office. This makes home DNA testing a no brainer for your peace of mind.

Easy at Home Crafts

At home crafts are a simple yet fun way to spend your free time getting creative. Both children and adults can take joy in crafts and hobbies of all kinds. It doesn't have to be complex or require any specific training or skill. The best crafts are the ones that can be done in your own home with regular household items. There are many easy at home crafts that involve little cost or investment other than your time.

Recycling and reusing has become a stronghold in most families. Taking care of the environment should be a priority to us all. Consider how the reuse of some items can be turned into a craft item. Things like CDs actually have more uses than most people might assume. Glue two of them together with the reflective sides facing outward to create a sun catcher. Hang it with a pretty piece of ribbon or crazy coloured shoelace. Try putting Christmas lights through the hole of the CD to create a reflector that intensifies the brightness of the lights. Have the kids make some for grandparents as a gift or help add a sparkle to your own home.

Origami is a fun craft idea that easily holds the interest of kids. There are many easy step by step instructional tools found online to get you started. Origami involves everything from the incredibly easy to the advanced so look up your skill level and see what you can create. Purchase beautifully decorated wrapping paper for this project or make your own with sparkles and glue. Take the opportunity to teach your child about the history of Origami and the meaning behind some of the pieces.

Design and decorate a bookmark to promote literacy in your home and get your children active in crafts. Start with sturdy construction paper and a variety of decorative supplies like markers, stickers or sparkles. Have your kids select a favourite story and create their bookmark based on the theme of the book. Not only does it get them creative, it can also get them excited about reading which some parents have difficulty with.

Many people find sewing to be a craft that allows for creativity while also providing one with quiet time to focus on a hobby of their choice. Sewing clothing items creates an original gift to give or to keep for your own personal use. Cross stitching is something that can be done at all ages. By following a pattern, simply sew according to the required steps and the result will be a beautiful picture that can be hung for decoration or given as a gift.

People who devote time to workings on crafts or participating in a hobby tend to experience lower stress levels than those who work with no time for play. It's necessary to unwind sometimes by doing something you enjoy. Look online for ideas or join a local hobby group. Whether you do it alone or with others, it's important that you're having fun. You don't have to leave the house to enjoy craft making. Get creative with the tools around you.

Make Your Home Dust Free Using House Cleaning Tips

Doing an everyday chore of dusting the house is not an easy thing to do. Most of the people are looking for house cleaning tips in order to make their dwellings dust free. Also, this will help them to minimize their everyday workload.

Cleaning the house is among the least loved thing to do for most individuals. Sad to say, this is required in order to keep the house looking hygienic. To maintain the sanitation of the home is a thing that will make you feel comfortable and to live healthy in that place.

Everyone is definitely seeking for efficient ways to be able to get these chores done in the most convenient method. As you read on, you will learn how to make your home dust free. With these guidelines you will be able to manage your time and deal with other significant things in your life.

Decorations would be helpful in maintaining a dust free home. You may use decorative which won't grasp dust. Using small figurines or other decorative which are curved and smooth surfaced will not catch much dust.

Carpets hold a lot of dirt which can make the people in your house ill. How? Simply because they can inhale the dust collected in those carpets. What you can do is go for tile flooring or hard wood. These options are better for cleaning purposes. They are also easier to maintain. There's no need for vacuuming and soaping the floors.

Air purifiers can do a lot of help in reducing the quantity of dust in your home.

If you are fond of collecting stuff toys, then it is time to lessen that collection. These materials are one of the things that gather dust the most. Maybe you can keep some but you have to minimize collecting these things.

It's not always the floors and carpets that catch dust, but you have also to remember to clean thoroughly your appliances. Electric fans, back of the fridge, television, computer, the wirings, and a lot of type of appliances usually acquire dusts.

Practice leaving your shoes at the door step, you may place a shoe rack outside so the footwear will not be cluttered around. Ready some slippers inside the house so you won't go barefoot as you walk along.

If you are keeping pets especially the furry ones, you should make it a habit to bathe them regularly. Long haired pets carry most dust from outside and their furs would scatter around the house as well.

Regularly clean clothes and linens in hot water as this method would aid in killing the dust mites which makes people ill.

With the mentioned house cleaning tips, having a home dust free is not a hard chore to do anymore.

Choosing the Correct Bricklayers' Spirit Level

The Spirit Level is probably the most expensive part of the bricklayers tool kit, because keeping the work level (horizontal) and plumb (vertical) is the core to producing high quality brickwork job. These levels come in different sizes; with the main size for everyday work is nine hundred millimeters (3 feet) or twelve hundred millimeters (4 feet) in length. Two things affect the length of a bricklayers spirit level:

The longer the level, the greater the accuracy.

When working in cramped quarters a long level is useless. So it is also useful to have a nine-inch torpedo level in your kit to work in tight spaces.

Bricklayers spirit levels come in several different styles, materials, lengths, features and price ranges. Despite this, levels are not terribly expensive and a good one will last you a lifetime with proper care. However, a bad one will cause you real problems if you are producing work that is not straight, horizontal or vertical, so do not compromise on quality!

So what should you look for when choosing a level? The two most important factors to look for are the design and the material it is made of. The cheaper levels will have simple I-beam designs because they look like an "I" when viewed from the end. Cheaper designs are often made of hard plastic. Better quality levels are made of machined aluminum or hardwood bound with brass. These will have a more stable, box design that is less likely to warp and twist. Another factor to look for is a lifetime warranty on the vials.

Whilst they are similar in design and price to a standard carpenters level, bricklayers levels are designed to be more rugged for continual use around bricks, blocks, and mortar. Also, they are designed for repeated cleaning with a brush and water. Some levels have a reinforced edge that can be tapped with a trowel or hammer while the level is lying on the bricks - this simplifies checking and adjusting the brick courses as the work proceeds.

As well as being solid level, it is important that the bubble vial is accurate. These bubbles should set in clear resin/plastic and be protected by the body of the level. In some high quality levels, the vials are replaceable if they break, or even adjustable if they become inaccurate.

Hardwood Classics

Many traditionalists choose hardwood for spirit levels because they its look and feel. Also some bricklayers appreciate that the continual use of a protective linseed oil seal helps to keep the mortar from sticking to the sides.

Level in a Box

Box-shape levels resist twists and bends better than I-beam shaped levels of the same weight and length. Some levels have a built-in mirror that lets you check the vertical-testing plumb vial by looking through the levels edge rather than having to press the side of your head against a wall.

Why do some levels have more that two lines engraved on the vial bubble?

Many spirit-level vials have two sets of lines engraved on them. When the bubble is centered between the inside pair, it indicates level; but when it touches one of the outer lines, it means the level is sloping at a 2-percent gradient (about ¼ inch per foot of run), Why would this be useful, well this is the minimum slope needed for pipes, and rain gutters to drain properly.

Making sure a Level is level.

A must be accurate level if it is to do its job correctly. To check that a spirit level is accurate, place it on a flat surface and note where the bubble ends up. Then turn the level around, if the tool is accurate, the bubble should fall in exactly the same place. Levels with replaceable vials can be adjusted, but may also slip out of accuracy so they should be tested regularly. If the level is inaccurate and cannot be adjusted, throw it away as it will only cause you to deliver poor brickwork.

Use Telescopic Ladders to Make Your Job Easier

Various tasks, people and projects require different types of ladders. Ladders come in many styles, heights and grades of material, so it's important to look for that perfect ladder for the job at hand. You'll want to choose a ladder that provides sturdiness as well as the right length to perform your tasks safely and productively.

One type of unique ladder that works well for all sorts of jobs is the telescopic ladder. It makes work projects go smoother through easy carrying and storage, and allows for many adjustments in height to meet the demands of various jobs. It also comes in a number of styles so you can find one that fits your needs.

Styles of the Telescopic Ladder

The styles of the telescopic ladder include the telescopic loft ladder, the telescopic steps (or telesteps), the telescopic ladder (black or red color line), and the combination ladder. The telescopic loft ladder gives easy access to the loft area of a home or business. It can be fitted for various heights and easily installed in the area above the loft's hatch. When the hatch is closed, the ladder is housed completely within the frame and takes up no space in the loft.

The telescopic steps ladder folds up and is easy to carry. It has two halves that pull out to create sturdy support. It also has a carrying handle that makes it easy to lift. The regular telescopic ladder comes in black or red colors, and having this ladder handy is like owning ten ladders in one. It adjusts to ten different lengths so you can always find the right height for your needs. It is also lightweight, easy to transport (folds very small to fit in the trunk of a car), and is easy to store. With its rust-resistant surface, it is smooth to the touch and durable.

If you need a ladder that's more versatile, there's also a combination ladder, which combines the step and regular ladders into a single unit. It can be used as a freestanding ladder or supported against a wall or roof like a regular ladder.

Things to Consider when Buying a Ladder

Think about how you will use the ladder. Will you need it for tasks inside the home such as painting, changing light fixtures, or hanging wall paintings and curtains?  If you only plan to use it inside and your home features average-height ceilings, then a stepladder might suffice. If you need the ladder for outdoor chores such as washing windows, cleaning the roof and gutters, trimming trees, or repairing the outside of your home, a regular or combination ladder will do the trick.

When buying a ladder for business purposes, you'll want one that's durable and dependable to reduce the risk of on-the-job accidents. It's very important to buy a high-grade work ladder if you have employees that will be using the ladder.  Even if you have to pay more, buying a higher quality ladder will be well worth the investment. It could even protect you or your business from a lawsuit!

Whether buying a telescopic ladder or some other type of ladder, be sure the ladder will work appropriately for the tasks at hand. You can go online to find great deals on high quality ladders.  Shopping online gives you more variety and enables you to look at all the features of various ladders from the comfort of your own home. Ladders shouldn't only be for convenience; they should provide a safe way to get the job done!

Phoenix Program 1967

Learn about the Phoenix Program initiated by the CIA in 1967 that violated the Geneva convention. Following by documentary of American's intervention of manipulating the human brain. This project was highly sponsored by the CIA after WWII in 1945. Techniques of manipulating opposition such as ones at home during American's "Viet Nam war" would be mastered so that "it would never happen again". Frequencies from radio airwaves is also an efficient tool for controlling moods of the human brain. The newly introduced RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip or Verichip (Verification Chip) is a new human identity microchip that will be installed into American citizen on May 2008. This chip will manage and record the citizen's life history, his current location, his financial balance. This chip is the revolutionary chip to control the life of human beings. Soon enough each individual of the states will be a product like ones at the supermarket. The RFID chip can be turned off upon request, if the product steps out of line, and his/her "credit" (money, friends, family etc) within society will be erased. Those who refuse to accept the RFID chip will be isolated from society, they cannot enter bars, clubs, purchase smoke, travel outside the states, etc. "If you tell people lies often enough, they will eventually believe it". This is what put an end to Communism, so USA will have the liberty of controlling people around the world. I won't be surprise if the CIA deletes this video ...

2. TRIPOD, use a solid heavy duty one. Check out the second hand market.

3. FLASH. (Studio Flash), a separate studio flash unit. Start by checking the used photo equipment stores, trying to find good second hand studio flash units.

4. FLASH METER. Visit your photo suppliers and check out the new and second hand stock. Ask for advice, it's better to find one that you feel comfortable with.

5. DIGITAL or FILM STOCK: If your using film then 100 ASA film speed, or equivlent ISO digital camera setting will do just fine in most situations. At this stage you have to decide if you want to shoot with color print film, color transparency slide film, or black and white film.

SIMPLE LIGHTING SET UP For Head Shots.

SEAT YOUR MODEL: On a stool, one or two meters in front of a plain background, talk to her, she's nervous too. (Read that line again!) It's Important. Keep a good 'rapport' with your model, she will work much better with you. Did she fix her hair and her make up OK. If possible it's a good idea to have a make up artist and hairdresser on hand to help you, the more attention to detail the better will be the results.

SET THE CAMERA: On a tripod, at the same height as the models head, borrow a stand in model to sit in for a few minutes, while you 'GET TO GRIPS' with the lighting set up. At this stage, you will realize what an advantage it was, you spent your 'hard earned cash' on a new or used studio flash unit, with built in modeling lights, to give you some idea of your lighting effects.

REMEMBER YOUR STUDIO LIGHTING: Should be set up and ready to use, long Before your model walks on the set.

POSITION YOUR 'BROLLY' FLASH: About 45 degrees angle to one side of the camera position and also about 45 degrees angle above the models head. The distance between the Flash and the subject's head, (for head shot's), should be about one meter flash to subject distance.

PLACE A LARGE WHITE REFLECTOR: To the opposite side as your flash unit, as close as possible to the subject. Sometimes it's a good idea to place a flash unit bounced into the reflector as fill in, taking care not to over power your 'Key Light'. Next, place a small white reflector under the models chin, to bounce light up to the shadow area under the chin.

FLASH METERS: Now, check out what exposure you should use and set the f. stop, (aperture), on the camera. The shutter speed is not so important in the studio, as long as it's no faster than the camera's recommended flash sync' speed, or slower.

IT WOULD BE a good plan to do a test run the day before, allowing you time to process your test shots and check your exposure and lighting. Many professional photographers use a medium format camera in the studio, which can be fitted with a Polaroid camera back, allowing them to make instant tests on the spot. Also some Pro Photographers use medium format cameras which have been fitted with a special digital camera back, allowing the images to viewed on screen immediately.

OTHER LIGHTS: It's also a good idea to add two or three other lights to your studio set up, (if the budget will allow).

A HAIR LIGHT: At the back of the set and to one side, fixed about two meters high, clipping the models hair. This should have a 'snoot' or 'honeycomb' fitted to the front of the light, to prevent stray light falling on the camera lens.

BACKGROUND LIGHTS: Can also be put to good use, to light up, or create effects with the background.

IT'S REALLY A MATTER of experimentation to develop your own technique, until you have perfected a pleasing effect and you are more or less satisfied with your results. In the meantime you can drive your friends and members of your family crazy in trying out your new found skills... And then...

SET UP YOUR own small portrait studio in a spare room or garage at home.

JUST KEEP ON TESTING until you have mastered the art.

Basic Home Improvement Tools For DIY

Home improvement tools are a necessity for living from the practical wants of homeowners to the requirements of the professional tradesperson. Regular repair jobs, alteration and maintenance can be enumerated in the task list of any homeowner. Information and recommendation on a broad range of DIY and tradesperson tools will benefit homeowners, plumbers, electricians and particularly framers whose work revolves around having the proper tools.

Despite the fact that cordless home improvement tools are not as powerful as regular corded tools, they are now well able to perform an extensive array of jobs from light-duty remodeling to big-time industrial projects. Their portable, lightweight and compact design allows you to engage in jobs where access is limited with cordless expediency.

Before looking into the different types of cordless tools, I must say, lithium ion batteries are highly recommended when operating cordless tools. Although costlier than regular batteries, they are lightweight, recyclable, have an extensive shelf-life and are still dependable in low temperatures. Oftentimes, combination packages with several cordless tools including lithium ion battery packs are made available in hardware stores. On the other hand, you will probably just buy the individual tool if you already own other cordless home improvement tools of the same brand.

Now, the cordless tools! Certain types of saws are better suited to various kinds of projects. Cordless circular saws are preferable when cutting straight lines (like when ripping material), or for the more general use of cross cutting. A cordless jigsaw is more often used for finer work involving cutting curves and patterns in materials. For demolition style work, you must consider cordless reciprocating saws, because they are a remodeller's tool of choice. There are other cordless saws, depending upon your job requirements that you might consider like a: cordless chain saw, cordless table saw, cordless router, etc.

Here are some supplementary tools which ought to be in the "work vehicle" or "tool shed" of every tradesperson and homeowner too. The ladder is one of the basic home improvement tools used for reaching areas of work when you are vertically challenged. There are several designs with distinct features and functions particular to the purpose you have in mind for the ladder. Examples of these are the folding step ladder, telescoping ladder or the gorilla ladder which can be used either for reaching varying heights or taking different shapes for hard-to-reach areas. There are also an excellent range of ladder parts which will help to improve your safety when your feet no longer have the comfort of the ground beneath them. The hands-free head flashlight guarantees excellent illumination in areas of restricted light or "after hours" work. Another small but significant home improvement tool is a leather tool belt which will help organize your nails, and keep your hammer and tape measure in there proper place within easy reach.

You'll be able to produce the project anytime you want, regardless of whether it be several weeks from the very first time you did it, even years. All you have to do is transfer the exact software program again and the design will turn out the identical results every time.

Much like their larger counterpart, the mini lathes can go ahead and bevel wood, metal or brass. Despite the fact that there are limitations in utilizing the mini lathe, you will continue to be equipped to produce really excellent project pieces. It is possible to go ahead and carve and even taper using this type of compact appliance.

When buying a mini lathe, you need to take many items into consideration. Very first, think about the items that you will create since this will likely allow you to choose the type and sort of lathe machine to obtain. Easy Tips to Clean and Protect Leather Furniture

Leather furniture gives your room a rich and elegant appearance. It represents a large percentage of furniture sold today and consumers have realized there are many benefits to owning leather furniture.

Because leather adjusts to body temperature it is very comfortable to sit on. It warms to your body in the winter and it feels pleasantly cool in the summer. It is more durable than fabric and as a result it lasts longer. Leather furniture is even great for families with children because the material will stand the test of spills, children's climbing, and all of their rough house kind of activities.

Leather furniture is so durable that many people forget to properly care for it, which can cause serious problems with the leather itself. Leather needs to be kept out of direct sunlight and away from heating vents. Direct sunlight and the heat will break down the natural oils in the leather, making it more likely to crack. Leather also needs to be cleaned and conditioned on a regular basis in order to maintain a high level of appearance as well as remaining soft to the touch.

There are different types of leather and they each have different care and cleaning instructions. The suede or nubick leathers have no pigment and need a special cleaner that does not use any water. This type of furniture generally gets marked or soiled easily and you need to clean marks immediately to prevent damage setting in.

Aniline leather is a leather that has been dyed to colour, but has not received any coating or surface finish. Due to the dyeing process that is used, aniline leather is less stain resistant, but stays softer and more pliable than leather with other finishes. Water will darken the leather and in some cases damage the leather permanently. Special care and cleaning products are required to maintain this type of leather.

For any of the protected leathers the easiest way to clean them is to use a water based foam cleaning product with a neutral ph. Saddle soap is too harsh to use on leather furniture and many of the wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it. Do not use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones as they will eventually destroy the finish of the leather. Dirt particles get in the pores of leather which can cause the leather to dry and crack. Any spills on leather need to be cleaned immediately to avoid being absorbed into the leather and possibly causing a stain.

Areas on your furniture that might need extra care and attention are where the head rubs on a chair or the hands rest. Oils from our skin can penetrate the leather causing it to discolor or dry out. This can cause permanent damage to your furniture.

After you have cleaned your leather couch or chair it is necessary to apply a conditioner. This puts the natural oils back into the leather and works like a Scotchgard which will inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time. Applying a conditioner every three to four months provides additional protection from everyday living and can also protect the furniture from possible damage caused by any direct sunlight.

Whether you are following a regular cleaning regime yourself or having it done by professionals you will see the benefits in the appearance of your leather furniture. Most people take pride in the appearance of their home and you will be able to keep your furniture longer as well as maintain the beauty of your home. Not replacing your furniture sooner than necessary can save you thousands of dollars in needless expense.

Laminate Floor Cleaning Made Easy

The beauty of laminate flooring is uncontested, nothing can beat the shine of well kept wood floors. On the other hand unclean dull wood floors can make any room look dirty and dingy. Most home owners with wood floors often wonder what is the best approach for laminate floor cleaning? The answer is quite simple and laminate floor cleaning can be easily accomplished with common household chemicals!

Floor Cleaning Made Easy

The first step required for laminate floor cleaning is the good old fashioned broom sweeping. This will get all the big dust balls and larger items that may have accumulated off your floor quickly and easily. Sweeping will also make mopping your floor much easier and cleaner.

After the floor is swept free of debris you can make your laminate floor cleaning mixture! This is a very easy mixture to make and is made from common household items. First mix distilled white vinegar into a bucket at a ratio of 1/2 cup for every gallon of warm water. Although vinegar does not smell the greatest it will stop water spots from forming during laminate floor cleaning. It is recommended to stay away from harsh chemicals such as ammonia and bleach, the long term affects from these chemicals could be devastating to your laminate floors sealant.

The final step is in laminate floor cleaning is actually clean the floor! This can be done with either a towel or a sponge head mop. Many people prefer the mop because you can purchase an automatic wring mop that makes the job much easier!

You want the mop or towel damp but not to wet. The idea is to just pick up the dirt and dust and be very careful and make sure to not over saturate you laminate flooring as this could damage or swell the floor! Make sure to wring the towel or mop out between floor cleaning strokes. Work the room how ever you feel is the quickest way to get the floor clean

Laminate flooring adds beauty and elegance to any home and by using the proper chemicals for laminate floor cleaning you can guarantee that your wood floors beauty and shine will last a long time. Taking your shoes off at the door doesn't hurt either!

How Much Will My Laminate Flooring Cost?

The costs for installing laminate flooring in an average kitchen 10 feet by 10 feet can range anywhere from $600 to $1500. This depends on the type of laminate flooring you choose to install in your kitchen. The prices range differently depending on the glued laminate flooring, floating flooring, or the glueless laminate flooring. When you install laminate floors in your kitchen you will need many different tools.

If you decide on the floating laminate floors you won't need as many tools and this type of flooring is easier to install. However, the glueless laminate floors and the glued laminate floors require many tools if you want to do the job right. Before you install laminate flooring in your kitchen you need to prepare your kitchen floor for the job. The tools required for this include a pry bar to remove the shoe molding and trim, a level to verify the high and low spots on the floor, a cold chisel so you can pull up the old flooring, and a ball-peen hammer will be used to hit the chisel. You will need to use a putty knife for the prep work and a floor scraper to remove the entire previous residue from the floor.

If you have a wood sub-floor then you will need a belt sander to smooth the surface. You might need to rent a jamb saw if you don't want to purchase one also. The jamb saw will be used to cut the door jamb and other trimmings so you have enough clearance for the flooring. A trowel will be used to smooth the leveling compound. The tools for preparation should cost you less than $100, including the cost for renting the saw. You will need many tools for the installation of the kitchen laminate flooring also. These tools include a backsaw and a miter box for cutting angles in the flooring. A circular saw is for straight cuts with a carbide tipped blade and a saber saw with a laminate blade will be used for cutting curves. You can rent saws from hardware stores if you do not want to purchase them for around $20 to $30 a day. The basic tools you will need for the installation of your laminate flooring in the kitchen will run you under $100.

You will need an electric drill, tape measure, marker, utility knife, screwdriver, coping saw, hacksaw, nails, claw hammer, caulking gun, clamp, straps, pull bar, spacers, and a tapping block. If you don't want to purchase each individual tool for installing laminate floors you can find laminate floor installation kits which include all of the tools you will need to complete the job from $350 to $500. The kits make it easier so you don't have to purchase each individual item but they are relatively more expensive than you will actually spend if you purchase the tools separately.

You will also need to purchase glue if you are using glued laminate flooring. Since you are considering putting laminate flooring in your kitchen you should use glue on glueless laminate flooring also. The glue will provide extra sealant in areas where the refrigerator or the dishwasher are and prevent less damage due to moisture or leaking from these appliances. The more protection you can provide on the kitchen floor with the glue and sealant, the longer your floors will last. The glue and the sealants should cost you around $40 for your kitchen floor. Laminate flooring can cost you from $0.65 to $3.00 per square foot depending on the type of flooring you would like to install in your kitchen. For an average kitchen size of 100 square feet you will be looking at spending from $100 to $600 depending on if you would like the glueless planks or the glued laminate flooring. It will also depend on the quality of the laminate and the protection on the flooring.

You will also need to purchase a roll of underlay which will be placed under the laminate flooring. Underlay averages around $0.30 per square foot or $30 for a roll of 100 square feet. It is important to remember that you will need to purchase at least 10 additional square feet of materials. Do not purchase the underlay and flooring for your exact floor size because you will make mistakes and need extra flooring. Installing laminate flooring in your kitchen will cost you around $600 to $1500 depending on the flooring you decide upon and the actual sizes of your kitchen. You can purchase the tools separately or find kits that include all of the tools you need.

When you are laying laminate flooring in a kitchen, you should really think about choosing the higher end flooring because of the protection offered. A kitchen area is known to have mold issues near the sink, dishwasher, and refrigerator because of the moisture that comes with these appliances. It is better to lay the protected flooring so you don't find yourself having to repair or replace the flooring from moisture issues.

Tips For a Tidy Home

Don't you love coming home to a clean house? Whether you live in a two-room apartment or a sprawling ranch, the air just feels fresher when the place is clean and neat. Although some busy folks hire a housekeeping service to come in every week or two to make things right, most of us fend for ourselves and bravely tackle the dirtiest household chores when we can't bear the grime any longer.

Cleaning your home doesn't have to be a dreaded task, however. With a few arrangements ahead of time, you can be ready to go and get the work done in no time flat. All it takes is a little bit of organization and preparation, and you can whisk through those weekly duties pronto.

1. Stock cleaning supplies. Use the most natural and non-toxic products you can find. Or consider making your own. Clean the toilet bowls with Alka Seltzer, for example, by tossing in a couple of tablets, letting them fizz for an hour so, and then scrubbing the bowl to remove lingering debris. For counter space and bathroom fixtures, use a paste made of baking soda and water and apply it like cleanser. Rinse each surface thoroughly, and you will be surprised to see how effectively this works. Try a half-cut of vinegar following by a cup of hot water to clear a clogged drain. You can find many types of homemade cleaners and fresheners that will save money and cut fumes as well as protect your household materials.

2. Get organized. Keep all supplies and cleaning equipment in a specific area so you can find them when needed. Wash or replace cleaning rags, and don't forget to buy paper towels. Replace your mop head and broom every three to six months, or as needed, to keep these tools working effectively. Choose a certain time slot and try to follow it each week for doing the general cleaning. For example, this could be Thursday evening, Saturday morning, or another time when you can get the housework done without interruption.

3. Work efficiently. Start at one end of the house-the one furthest from the center-and work your way back. Put a clothes basket or paper bag in each room to receive items that need to be moved to another area, such as discarded newspapers, shoes, or dishes. Train the kids to return items like these to their proper locations at the end of each day.

4. Go light to heavy. Start with dusting, wiping, or surface tasks first. Then move on to the sweeping, vacuuming, or mopping, as well as windows or other heavy-duty tasks that remain to be done. Open the windows, weather permitting, to bring in fresh air and let out contaminated air. You'll love the fresh scent unless you live in a heavily polluted area.

5. Clean up thoroughly. Put everything away where it belongs, cleaning supplies included. Pick up magazines, toys, and other discarded items. Place fresh-cut flowers in a vase on the table, or bake muffins for supper. The delicious aroma will add to the wonderful clean feeling of your home.

Make a habit of keeping the house tidy each day. Put things where they belong. Do the dishes after each meal. Put away groceries when you return from the store. Then you won't have as much to do when cleaning day rolls around.

Home Made Hand Tools For Hobby Foundry Work

If you have been thinking about making a start in hobby foundry work in your home workshop, you may be forgiven for thinking that the tools and equipment are going to cost you an arm and a leg, this need not be. Sure, you could trot off to the downtown industrial tools supplier and take home an arm full of expensive tools.

But if you take a good look at some of the tools, you'll discover that the design principles and fabrication could well be undertaken in the home workshop if you have metal fabrication skills and a reasonable amount of basic metal working equipment.

Take for instance "crucible lifting tongs", once you understand how these tools operate; you could quite easily make a set or two over a weekend. The basic design action operates on the "scissor principle" but they don't cut anything, they are designed to "clamp securely" onto the crucible to lift it out of the furnace when the metal has melted. Great caution needs to be taken while carrying out this operation, as one slip due to faulty or badly designed tongs, and you could have a disaster on your hands.

The best way to design and build a set of tongs is to copy a well made set, or to follow directions set out in a textbook or ebook downloaded from the net, we'll give you some links a little further on in this article.

Some of the most frequently used basic tools you'll need in the hobby foundry are; Bench ramming moulders tool - Tube sprue cutter - turned wood sprues - slick & oval spoon - hand riddle or sand sieve - draw pins, screws & hooks - rapping bar and spike - gate cutter - strike off bar - sand carving tools (made from old hacksaw blades).
The tools mentioned above seem to be the ones that will be most used in your hobby foundry... and all of them can be home made if you have metal & wood working skills, it will take time and effort to make the tools required but they wont cost you a red cent if you make them from scrap materials, and if you are like most hobbyists you will know where to "scrounge stuff".

You may have to experiment with different ideas before you arrive at the most satisfactory design, but you will learn a great deal about why things have to be made in certain ways.

Do you own a wood lathe? Even a most basic machine will suffice in the home workshop, you could even make your own if you were keen enough,I guarrantee there are tens of thousands of home made wood lathes sitting in hobby workshops the world over. A wood lathe will repay itself many times over when you start to make patterns for your hobby foundry.

Your bench-ramming tool can be quickly turned to shape on your wood lathe, in fact, while you're at it, make two or three of them in different shapes & sizes, they will all come in handy when ramming and moulding patterns of differing sizes, you could get away with a single tool, but you wont regret making extra tools.

After a pattern has been completely rammed in a sand mould, and before the metal is poured, the pattern has to be removed without disturbing any of the surrounding sand. Draw pins and spikes are used to remove timber patterns from sand moulds.

Simple draw pins can easily be fabricated from long slender wood screws, particleboard screws are ideal. The easiest way to convert woodscrews into draw pins is to braze-weld a short length of 1/4" dia mild steel rod onto the head of the screw...that is all you need to do... make a set of them with different gauge screws as well long and short ones and you should have the field covered as far as lifting pins or draw spikes go... simple isn't it.

Blunt hacksaw blades are usually thrown in the bin, from now on you should save them, as many useful little hobby foundry tools can be made from old saw blades, quite often small sand carving tools can be quickly made by grinding and shaping using a normal bench grinder.

By being resourceful and thinking how you can use scrap materials, you should see now that there is absolutely no need to spend large amounts of money to get the tools and things you need for your hobby. If you are not sure about your own building & fabricating abilities then you should always ask advice.

The Range of Gardening Tools Available

If you have ever been in a home improvement store and strolled past the aisles filled with gardening tools, you will probably understand this. Here are some descriptions of the common gardening tools and their functions.

Shovel or Spade

Every gardener needs a shovel for digging. The most versatile and widely used is the round point shovel. It is used to dig, scoop, or to carry dirt from one point to another. The square point shovel is similar except as the name suggest; the tip of the shovel is flat and straight edged. It is used for leveling large areas and as a scoop for gravel, soil, or snow.

Trowel or Garden Shovel

These are the small shovel tools that you use for scooping out the soil to create holes for planting new flowers.

Gardening Forks

If you are planting a small area or are using planting containers, then you will only need a hand fork. Forks are used for working in tightly planted areas, removing unwanted weeds and for transplanting small seedlings. Forks are also used to loosen and aerate the soil.

If you are going for a larger garden, a garden fork will be necessary. Garden forks are be used for digging and they can also be used for aerating the soil, moving compost and cultivating a garden.

Garden Rakes

Rakes come in many different shape, sizes and material. It is used for picking up leaves and to level the ground. Rakes can also be used to aerate a lawn. Be careful not to use steel garden rakes for raking leaves on your lawn, you will damage your lawn. Use a proper lawn rakes instead.

Garden Hoes

The traditional design of the garden hoe is a long handle with a flat blade set at a right angle at the end. Hoes are used for breaking up the surface soil, building up mounds for vegetables and also for making a seed furrow. They can also be used to chop off pesky weeds and unwanted plants. The pointed corners can also be used as a light duty pick. Pruning shear

Your pruning shears will see a lot of action in the garden. They are used for trimming branches, overgrowth grass and foliage. It is important to buy a pruning shears, which fits your hand well and is easy to operate. There are different types of shears for different functions. For example, do not use a hedge shears for cutting big branches, they are for detailed shaping of hedges only.

Personal Attire and Protective Gears

Finally, do not overlook the importance of proper attire. You will need good work gloves to protect your hands and kneepads to make kneeling more comfortable. Protect your eyes with a pair of safety glasses or face shield when using your string trimmer or pressure washer or when working with any power tools.

The Decision to Stay at Home

Your Mom stays at home? Oh, so she doesn't work?

First, let's make something clear. ALL moms are work-at-home moms. Cooking, grocery shopping, cleaning and laundry might not be highly respected occupations, but unless you've got one of those super-husbands who considers these tasks his responsibility as much as yours, the chances are that you're taking on most of those tasks yourself. This seems to be just as true for moms who have worked all day at an outside job and maybe started and ended the day with a long commute.

The Decision to Stay at Home

All this was difficult enough before you became a parent. Then, pure exhaustion set in. When you realized that you didn't want just quality time with your children, but quantity time as well, you made the tough decision: You became a stay-at-home mom. You decided it was best for your family for you to be the one who raises your children-not a babysitter or the staff at a daycare center. No matter how child-friendly they seemed, you always felt that no one else can care for your children as well as you. Best of all, now you don't have that distressing guilt and worry that bothered you ten hours a day or more.

The first thing you probably noticed is a serious cut in income. But then, you aren't spending as much on gas or lunches out or expensive clothes for work. You're really more comfortable in jeans and tees (and they're much more practical anyway). And you realize the kids don't care one way or another if they're wearing designer clothes. You can economize on food now because you're at home to cook nutritious meals instead of picking up fast food or a pizza on the way home.

And there are so many great payoffs! You're there to cheer Emily on when she takes her first steps and says her first word. You never have to miss a school program or a soccer game. Now you can take Madison to ballet and Jacob to his karate class. You're there to wipe away tears and answer those important questions that come up out of the blue-and you've got the energy to really play with your little ones.

There Seems to be Something Missing

You're aware of a troubling emptiness that used to be filled with the thrill of accomplishment that you took from your old job. You miss working with professionals to meet challenges, find solutions, and celebrate success. You miss the feeling of financial freedom you got from having your own paycheck and your own 401K. And you're getting a little tired of living frugally. It would be nice to be able to add something to the family income, but you really don't want to leave your kids!

There Is a Solution

Every day, millions of people search online for legitimate work-at-home opportunities. Thanks to the information age and the availability of jobs not just in the US but all over the world, home-based entrepreneurs have found that they don't have to choose between family and professional fulfillment. It is estimated that over one-third of families with children 18 or younger have at least one parent working in a home-based business. The Internet offers hundreds of different opportunities to be an at-home entrepreneur.

As long as you have the desire to succeed and the willingness to learn, you can soon be enjoying the freedom of being your own boss, the return of that productive, professional feeling, and the flexibility to enjoy your family.

All genuine work-at-home opportunities provide you with the tools and expert guidance you'll need to get started in your own business.

The possibilities are endless!

Online Co-Workers

Look around, and you'll be pleased to find an interesting online community of people just like you who have found a way to continue using the skills they acquired on the job without ever leaving home. They like to joke that their commute takes 30 seconds-the time it takes to walk from the kitchen to their computer in their pajamas, with that second cup of home-brewed coffee fixed just the way they like it. While they work, they're free to snuggle with babies, keep an eye on a toddler, or get dinner started.

These stay-at-home moms are free of the hassles of a corporate job away from home, yet they have recovered the self-esteem that comes from being intellectually and financially productive entrepreneurs. Who could ask for more?

The Next Step Is Up to You

To determine the path that is right for you, you need information about the different kinds of home-based business openings available. Fortunately, finding out couldn't be easier. There is no obligation or risk involved. Contact me now for a no cost consultation.

Clark Air Base,RP(HOG-1990) Happening on the Green & more

One of the extra special things about life in the Clark Air Base/Subic Bay communities was the fun times to be enjoyed during a special event Known as "THE HOG." It was Clark's Happening on the Green. Of course many community events occurred at Subic. But, the HOG somehow turns out to be the event I documented in this 9 minute piece. Another event that was rather new, was the Clark Air Base Chili-cookoff. Ok, Ok, all of this must sound quite routine and boring by today's standards for things to do. But thousands of families overseas, away from home can become very creative, when armed with a remarkable tool like the inovative staff of a Morale, Welfare & Recreation Division (MWR).. Let me take this time to THANK ALL MWR STAFFERS WHEREEVER THEY MAY BE, IN WHATEVER BRANCH OF SERVICE THE SERVED, OR CONTINUE TO SERVE... THANKS!!! While the "wild soundtracks" of kids laughing and folks screaming on rides has been overdubbed with production music, the message of "Goodtimes in Paradise" is not lost. The original tapes of the chili-cookoff have been located. And I am presently editing a FULL version of that event, to give even more insight to how we all enjoyed the Philippines experience while it lasted. This is how many of us shared great times during our stay in paradise~~~until Mt.Pinatubo bidded most of us GOODBYE... Enjoy!!!

Outdoor Lawn Power Tools

For most people, the only outdoor lawn power tools they use are a lawn mower and maybe a weed eater. However, there are many other kinds of tools available for those that have lots of time and money to spend on manicuring their lawn. These include:

Blowers
Edgers and Trimmers
Mulchers
Hedge trimmers
Sprayers
Rakers

If you have trees on your property, you can benefit from having a blower for the leaves in the fall. Instead of the backbreaking work of raking the leaves, you can blow them all into a heap and then bag them up for the trash. There are also blowers that will clean up the edges of your walkways or driveway after you mow the grass. By blowing the little bits of grass back onto the lawn, you are also fertilizing the lawn naturally.

Of course you want to keep your lawn looking neat and trim around the edges and around any shrubs or plants. Edgers and trimmers will help you do this work effectively. Depending on the size of lawn you have, you can have a lawn mower that mulches the grass clippings. You can also decide to attach a bag to the mower to collect the clippings or leave them on the lawn to be raked up later.

A tiller is another power tool that really comes in handy when you want to plant flowers. You won't even have to disturb any existing flower beds in order o plant something right in the middle. Most of the power tools suited for lawn work are lightweight and easy to handle. They do vary in price according to the size of the motor and the brand name.

Kitchen Tools - Equipping Your Workbench

Kitchen tools are so important to the preparation of a meal, and yet so few people really grant them the status they deserve. If you think about it, the tools you use are often-times more important than the quality of the ingredients. You might have the most amazing fresh apples, Aunt DeeDee's hand-made pie crust, and imported cinnamon and sugar. But if your knife is dull, your plastic mixing bowl is holding on to odors from last week's salsa, or maybe your pie pan isn't deep enough (or made of metal - we'll talk!), you might turn all those stellar ingredients into a less than stellar pie. Tragic, right?

On the other hand, if you have store-bought, refrigerated crust, apples from a can, a little caramel ice cream topping from a jar and some walnuts left over from Thanksgiving, I can make you an Upside-Down Caramel Apple Pie for which your folks will be BEGGING next holiday! The secret? I have the right tools!!

The tools you keep in your kitchen should match the way you cook MOST OFTEN. We all have specialty items that are pulled out during the holidays, and those are fabulous. But there are some staples that one should have around, just the way you keep certain staples in your pantry . . . flour, sugar, rice, salt, Double Strength Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract. Okay, maybe that last one is just me, but it SHOULD be you, too! You deserve to have the best tools at your fingertips!

Think about this: If you ask the handy-person in your home to fix that squeaky cabinet in the bathroom (you know the one - the door hangs a little cock-eyed and your mother-in-law comments about it every time she visits), what is the typical response? The response at my house is usually, "Ohhhh, well for THAT I need a special drill bit and a one of those inserts for the cabinet backing and probably three pints of wood stain or at least some matching putty . . . and WHILE I'M THERE at Home Depot, I could pick up those special blah-blah-blahs to do this other job that I've been putting off . . . "

You get the picture.

My handy person has the right idea. The right tool for the right job makes things go smoothly and makes the end result something of which to be very proud. I am so fortunate that my handy person understands that concept, so I never catch any flak for making sure my kitchen is stocked with the right tools for the job! Even my teenagers recognize that value, which is exciting because I know when they get out in the world, they will know how to feed themselves from somewhere other than the Ramen noodles aisle.

So what are the staples? You need to have quality for the things you do most often. If you bake a lot, you need quality mixing tools: a tempered glass bowl with measurements and a handle for ease of use; top-quality nylon scrapers that won't stain, hold odors, or drop their heads in your cookie dough; versatile measuring tools that can go in the dishwasher without warping or fading; sturdy, reliable pans (I prefer stoneware over metal because I find the stone's heat distribution leads to fewer disasters); you get the idea.

If you cook everything on the stove, you need top quality (lifetime warrantied) cookware! Look for glass lids, sturdy heat-proof handles, and (my personal favorite perk) lids which can hang up with the pans/pots. Think about how you cook on the stove . . do you need non-stick surfaces (omelets, stir-fry veggies, things with cheese) or would stainless work better for you (high heat cooking, searing meats, caramelizing onions, making gravies, etc.)? Maybe you need a little of both.

Do you make lots of casseroles and crock-pot dishes? You need top notch cutting tools! Make sure your kitchen boasts lifetime-warrantied knives, dishwasher-safe cutting boards, stoneware baking dishes, and fresh, fragrant spices.

Worried about the cost of equipping your kitchen with everything you need? Of course it's not an overnight process. Start by replacing one or two substandard tools in your kitchen with the good stuff! Trust me, when you see what a difference even ONE replacement will do for your confidence and your recipes, you will be HOOKED!! For me, I discovered that I could get everything I want at a discount or for free by teaching other folks like me about the tools I love! (Contact me for more information on that opportunity via my website listed at the bottom of this article.)

I have to share one more thing about having the right tools in your kitchen. I am a slob. I hate to clean anything. I hate having a dirty home, too, so you can imagine that this is a big problem for me! If I would only visit a psychotherapist, I'd probably be institutionalized immediately!! One of my very biggest requirements for kitchen tools is that they clean EASILY. I don't own a food processor because it bugs me that I have to take it all apart and clean all those little whatevers. UGH!! I will not scrub a lasagna dish or a roasted-chicken-pan, so I have stones (terrifically easy clean-up) and a non-stick roasting pan. It's all in the planning ahead! Nearly all my measuring tools and hand-held tools (spatulas, scrapers, scoops, peelers, spoons) go in the dishwasher - by the way, NEVER, EVER put good knives in the dishwasher! They are easy to wipe and wash by hand, so take the extra minute and they'll last forever (just a little tip from your Auntie Pam).

If you eat, you should have the tools to make every meal your best (including cookbooks with pictures, by the way - I can't understand why so many cookbooks are published with only words - Hellooooo?! Cookbook industry?? We would like to see a picture to know if we did it right!). Your kitchen is your workbench, so fill it with the right tools for the job! Your hard work is worth it, you deserve it!! Here's to great success and good eating!
