Do Open Houses Sell Homes - Finding the Right Tools For Effective Home Sale

Home sale is one challenging and totally rewarding venture that home owners and realtors may embark on. This is a valuable financial investment that renders more than just personal satisfaction since augmenting your finances through selling your house is extremely significant for a profitable investment. Hence, there are innumerable ways on how to sell your house in the midst of the overflowing competition in the real estate market. Conducting open house activities is one of the most important tools considered by most real estate agents in facilitating the sale of a certain property.

Open house is however deemed not a sure-fire way of getting a positive result as to sealing any purchasing deals. For instance, the fact that serious buyers consider making appointments instead of just attending open houses is one of the most salient bases to deal with. However this alternative is a great way to promote and advertise your property and increase awareness of people that your house is for sale and with a great quality. There are things you must basically consider if open house activities are beneficial and makes great sense for you to utilize.

The first thing to assess is the location of your house, including its capacity to deliver more potential buyers. If your property is located in an area where there is a lot of traffic, then chances are, more buyers may drive by and take advantage of the activity you are conducting. Living in new communities where there are model houses is also a great prospective for open house. Those who are planning to acquire their own homes without much time to wait for a construction of a new one may give you a home purchase offer as soon as they can.

The curb appeal and market value of the house is likewise necessary to determine if you are going to benefit from this type of activity or not. For instance, if your house has an extremely high "wow" factor, then it is most likely to be considered by most buyers. You can even turn casual visitors into qualified home buyers who would seriously consider purchasing your house. Hence, prior to making this activity, it is vital to know how to properly stage your house to draw attention and leave a lasting and persuasive mark in your visitors.

The listing price is another major factor that gives boost to chances of having a good result in open houses. Make sure that your house is properly appraised and inspected for you to give a reasonable and the right asking price. If your house however is priced relatively high compared to other properties in your area, it is not a very sound idea to conduct open house activities since it may not invite a good number of visitors in the first place. Furthermore, scammers and frauds flock houses which are priced higher than all the rest of the properties in the market.

Taking advantage and maximizing marketing tools to sell your house takes a lot of time, effort and imagination to use for your advantage. Open houses for instance may give positive or negative results depending on the right choices you are to make.

Rose Gardening Tools - Top Tools Every Rose Garden Must Have

These days, so many tools are available to the home gardener, whether at your local garden center, superstore or an infomercial touting the benefits of their most recent garden invention. You could spend hundreds of dollars on all types of gardening gadgets, but when it comes right down to it, there are only a few true necessities in rose gardening.

Because we all know that the old saying "every rose has its thorn" is very true, your first order of business in stocking your rose gardening tool box will be a pair of very good gloves. A rose garden is no place for cute, cotton gloves that will only keep your fingers clean. You should select heavy, leather gloves with a cuff so that your hands will be protected especially while pruning your rose plants. Some roses even have tricky, tiny thorns along their stem and if your hands are unprotected, these will go into your skin like tiny, splinters as you grasp the stems to cut back growth.

Onto the subject of pruning, you will want to select a good set of pruning shears. Shears generally fall into two categories, only one of which should be used in rose gardening. The first type, the anvil pruner, has blades that meet on top of each other and if used on your roses, will squash the stems and canes. The preferred type of pruning shear is the bypass pruner, whose blades pass each other as they cut the stems, as would a pair of scissors. These protect the stems and canes of your roses as you are cutting back the plants. Select a pair that has a comfortable grip and is a good fit for the size of your hand, as you will be using these frequently in your rose gardening. You should also consider the locking device on the shears, especially if you have young children.

The next tools are so simple and yet so necessary in rose gardening: a rake, a spade and a shovel. Choose a garden rake with sharp, closely spaced metal tines rather than a leaf rake with widely spaced tines. This will help you level soil for your rose beds. A hand held spade will be indispensable for moving soil around your plants. You should also choose a long handled shovel for planting, selecting for size and comfort of use because, again, this is a tool you will be using over and over in your rose garden.

The final set of tools, to add to your collection, are involved in the watering and care of your plants. You will need a watering system and the long handled garden wand sprayer that attaches to a hose is a great choice. These wands make watering the roots of your plants a breeze, and help to reach those tricky hanging baskets as well. For feeding and applying pesticides, a pressure sprayer that also attaches to your garden hose will prove invaluable. Mixing and applying will be so simple with just the addition of this tool.

Once your tool collection is complete, you will be on your way to successful rose gardening, armed with all the necessities. Just these basics are enough to get you started in rose gardening or to keep up with the rose garden you are already enjoying.

Cleaning Blinds

Cleaning Your Blinds

Keeping in mind that all blinds, including Venetian blinds and mini-blinds can be professionally cleaned, this is something you might also want to do at home.

You can give the blinds a routine monthly clean, and a deep clean two or three times a year. Cleaning your blinds is fairly simple, straightforward, an inexpensive.

To clean the blinds monthly, lower the blind fully and close all the slats completely. Wipe the slats with a damp rag. Consider adding a very small drop of dish washing liquid to the washing water.

When wiping the blinds down, be careful not to use too much pressure, especially with metal or aluminum blinds, because they are easily dented. Once they are dented, it is nearly impossible to correct the dent.

When you are finished wiping one side, open the slats completely and wipe the other side with a damp rag.
For a deeper clean, it's important to remove the blinds from the window fixings. Lay them outside on a cloth, or if necessary, in a large space in your home on a large cloth. Spray the blinds all over with an all-purpose cleaner, and allow them to sit for up to ½ hour.

After this, scrub the blinds with a soft brush, running the brush parallel to the slats of the blind. Turn the blinds over and repeat on the other side. When you are finished scrubbing, you can either hose your blinds down to rinse the cleaner and dirt away, or if you are indoors, you can dip them in a bath tub full of clean water. If possible, hang the blinds to dry in the sun. If this isn't possible, dry them thoroughly with a towel before re-hanging.

Cloth shades and blinds can be cleaned with a vacuum, but should also be professionally cleaned at least every two years.

Roofing Tools - Essential Tools For Your Roof

There's no doubt it's a wise move to hire a professional to remove, install or maintain a roof. But with a little bit of time and knowledge, and often with the help of a few friends, it is a realistic do it yourself project. If you use the right roofing tools the job can be relatively easy. Just look for these tools at a local hardware store.

A slate cutter does just what the name implies, cuts slate and shingles. It slices through most roofing materials like the proverbial hot knife through butter. Industrial versions cut 1/2" thick shingles easily. Some models have a punch to get them started, which also offers better control in the cutting process.

Instead of throwing the shingles to the ground, which requires a constant trek to the perilous edge, consider a ridge bucket. These buckets hug the roof so they won't slip even it's steep. It's safer and easier to use a ridge bucket to dispose of materials.

Use a hip runner to install ridge cap and hip ridges perfectly straight every time. Contractors use hip runners, so do it yourself roofers should take the hint.

Seaming pliers aren't for sewing. They're for yanking shingles, especially stubborn shingles that seem to have a mind of their own intent on staying in place. Seaming pliers include flat teeth to grip the shingle without tearing it. Combine the pliers with a good pair of thick work gloves to save your fingers and hands from injuries such as scrapes, bruises and blisters from gripping and pulling rough shingles.

What has a hammer head on one side and an ax and blade on the other? No, not a movie hero's weapon, it's a slater's hammer. This roofing tool can be used both for removing the old and installing the new roof. Don't worry about it going to waste after the project, it's also a handy every day hammer.

Not only will most local hardware stores carry these tools, they'll rent some of the larger ones such as a slate cutter. This way a home owner can use the best quality tools rather than one that's cheaper to purchase. Keep in mind too that knowledge is a roofing tool as important as any other. Local hardware stores, as well as the Internet, are great sources of information. Between books they carry and staff on hand who can give you advice, they can prepare a person for every step of the roofing process.

Garden Tool Organization 101

No, I am not a gardener. Whew, it just feels good to say that. Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is time to plant gardens and mow the lawns. We wait until after Mother's Day which was on May 11th this year to plant tomatoes and other warm loving veggies. Any earlier than this and they can get frozen. But this year the day after Mother's Day it was almost freezing at 36 F.

It takes the guilt away for me to say I am not a gardener. Don't get me wrong, I have done my share. I love the taste of veggies fresh from the garden. When our five girls were at home I would wake them up on Saturday morning before the sun was up (what was I thinking) so they could help weed the garden because I thought that would teach them how to work. Let's be honest here, it would have been easier to just have done it ourselves but we wanted them to have the experience. They all grew up with a fantastic work ethic, but none of them have gardens.

Organizing gardening tools can make gardening more enjoyable. Anytime you have to hunt for the tools, or other things it takes some of the fun out of it. Make a place in your garage or shed just for your gardening tools. Some people refer to zones in the garage and one of these zones would be for the gardening gear. Justin Cave, host of HGTV's "Ground Breakers" said, "When it comes to gardening, we seem to be unorganized, myself included. Getting organized makes you feel better and makes you want to garden." Personally I am not so sure it makes me want to garden, but the same concepts that apply to inside my home applies to outside my home. Organization just makes me feel better about my home and about myself.

Prioritize your needs and take the time to declutter. Get rid of those tools that have cracked handles or you avoid using because you aren't comfortable with. The saying 'you get what you pay for' is true. The cheap tool may look good at the store but the cheap ones generally are the ones that break the quickest and the easiest. It pays to pay for quality.

Susan Appleget Hurst, Better Homes & Gardens senior associate garden editor, recommends three essential tools. A leaf rake, spade and garden fork. She also recommends brightly colored handles that are easy to spot in the yard. Have you noticed how many handles are either green or brown? Maybe we could spray another color on the handle.

Hang tools on garage walls to save space and avoid accidentally driving over those that may have been leaned against the wall and have fallen. When hung they are easy to find and it looks organized. Hurst recommends a five-gallon bucket with a liner for tools. (She uses the Bucket Boss). The tools fit around the outside of the bucket and lawn clippings or weeds go in the bucket.

Hoses fit nicely on a hose reel. There are many different kinds of holders for the garden hose and when not in use they look better rolled up rather than lying out on the lawn. And they are better protected from the blaring hot sun.

If you have a container in the garage with drawers' smaller tools can be stored there. Label the drawer so you will know where to put the tool back after use to help you stay organized. Also keep the tools sharpened and clean. Wipe off dirt or mud with a cloth and at the end of the season wipe the metal tools with linseed oil. Even if you don't like to garden, when your tools are organized it will look like you do. Then you can always find them to loan to your neighbor

TOWER OF LONDON & TOWER BRIDGE London, England

THE TOWER OF LONDON and TOWER BRIDGEThe Tower Of London is the home of the Crown Jewels and one of the many historical sights of the United Kingdoms capital city.Just as with the British Empire, the Tower has a colourful and dramatic past and it was originally designed as a fortress by William The Conqueror. Not far from the Towers original main entrance prisoners were taken through Traitors Gate into the notorious dungeons.In1843 the moat dried up but the old fortress and its towers have survived to the present day.It must have been a terrifying experience to be imprisoned there and few prisoners lived to tell the tale of the rigors of the Tower. Many members of the English royal family were executed in the Tower but there were times when official execution was replaced by cold-blooded murder.Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry The Eighth, was the most famous of those who fell victim to the Tower.Tower Bridge is a masterpiece of Victorian technology and construction. Its drawbridge once allowed large sailing ships to travel to the centre of the city.Today, however, the majority of large ships dock downstream and now the famous old bridge is raised around 900 times each year to facilitate the passage of numerous vessels that travel along the Thames.Even today the River Thames is ruled by this majestic bridge and the spectacular view from the Bridges 50 metre high walkway is truly fascinating.Tower Bridge and the Tower Of London are without any doubt two of ...

Essential Tools For a Fireplace at Home

Tools are just one kind of fireplace accessories available to a fireplace owner. Other examples are decorative items or features which improve the functionality and safety of a fireplace. However, special care is needed when choosing the tools required for operating a fireplace. They will be used every time the fireplace is in operation, and therefore, they need to be of the highest quality possible to ensure a safe and satisfying experience.

Which tools are most important for operating a fireplace? First, it should be noted that there are three main activities related to operating a fireplace, each of them requiring its own tools: first, starting the fire, then, keeping the fire going, and finally, cleaning the fireplace after the fire has burned down. There are many different types of tools available for each phase - some of them are essential, while others are more like decorations or even toys for the fireplace owner.

For starting a fire, the right kind of fire starters are essential. While different kinds of more or less fancy objects are sold for this purpose, for example pine cones, as a matter of fact simple thin wood sticks cut from regular firewood are the cheapest choice and work perfectly well. Lighting the fire requires nothing more than a long gas-filled fireplace lighter, which is available in any supermarket. Traditionally, a bellows has belonged to every regularly used fireplace. While it is very helpful in speeding up the burning process, using a bellows will likely cause the remaining ash to fly up into the surrounding room.

To keep the fire burning, the classic fireplace tools seen near every fireplace in operation are required: tongs and a poker to adjust and move the burning logs and a shovel for smaller pieces as well as for ash removal. These tools are usually available in a set together with a holding rack and are made of either wrought iron or steel. While other tools are often included in such a set, none of them are as essential as the three mentioned above.

Cleaning a fireplace requires nothing more than a sturdy broom, the shovel from the tool set and possibly an ash bucket to hold the remaining ash once the fire has burned down. Also, many kinds of chemical cleaning fluids are sold specifically for glass fireplace screens. In most cases, a damp cloth dipped lightly into fine ash from the fire will do this job just as well.

In summary, only a few tools are absolutely required for safely operating a fireplace at home. Choosing wisely can therefore save the owner from spending too much money on items that will likely never be used.

Basic Gardening Tools for the Home Gardener

Basic Garden Tools

With a handy supply of primary garden aids, you won't be constantly thwarted by commonplace tasks, such as digging a hole or cutting a twig just when the moon is in the proper phase. If you're in doubt as to those tools you would like, try out some of your neighbor's tools. But don't be a permanent borrower; it's bad for everyone's disposition.

Tools can be bought at garden supply, department or hardware stores and at some lumber yards. Shop carefully for your first garden tools and be sure to only buy quality tools. Good tools should last for many years.

You'll need as a minimum :

A spade or long-handled shovel for digging holes to place large plants.

A spading fork for turning over and loosening soil. (You'll find there are "ladies' sizes" available for both spade and fork.)

A trowel for digging holes for small plants, mixing soil, and innumerable other small chores. My preference is for a sharp-pointed one similar to a small mason's trowel, because it's useful for cultivating, too. Those with slightly rounded sides, like miniature shovels, are excellent for digging small plants and making holes in which to place them.

A rake for smoothing soil that's been dug, and tidying up messes.

A hoe for cultivating and weeding.

Hand pruners for pruning small size growth and picking flowers. These should be of good quality and should fit your hand and grip. Try out several at the store.

A watering can and/or garden hose

Buy your tools a little at a time

If you follow your hunches, and buy the most familiar tools-shovel, rake, and hoe-you'll be right. But how about all the other tools offered? Actually, most of these were originally introduced to do specific agricultural jobs, but sometimes a home gardener found other functions for one or two of them, or the manufacturer altered a tool's design to fit the home gardener's needs.

The asparagus knife, for example, makes a dandy weeder, and the Warren hoe, originally designed for making furrows and for seeding operations, is now used more in home gardens for cultivating around shrubs. These are things that you will learn as you go along. So, start your tool collection sparingly and build it up as your needs become apparent.

Quality counts

When you buy garden tools, get the very best you can afford. A top quality product, if properly taken care of, will last you through most of your gardening years.

Don't buy any tool until you have checked it over thoroughly. Lift and swing the piece of equipment around a bit to test its weight and proper balance. A man-sized hoe may be just right for you but too heavy for anyone else in the family. How about handle length?

You may feel that a long-handled spade or fork is easier to wield. (It's a good idea to take along all the gardening members of the family when you're out buying garden tools.) Try the grip on all small hand tools. Get the one that "feels right" in your hand. Armed with the proper gardening tools you are ready to start your garden.

Drawing Tools and Tips For Beginners

Drawing is a relaxing and fun hobby for anyone willing to take the time to learn it, step by step. Just let yourself go and sketch, concentrating on what you're drawing. It is important to think positively, and not be too hard on yourself. So many of my students have told me at first, "I can't draw anything," or "my drawings are horrible!" but in time, they learned that with practice, their drawings improve. Don't discourage yourself with negative self-talk. Just do what comes from your heart. One of the great things about art is that there is no right and wrong to it. You have the creative license to do things your way, with no explanation. Take what you learn and make it your own by seeing what techniques and styles are most rewarding to you. When I was learning to draw, I had many, many lousy drawings. My father, a fantastic artist and architect, taught me to draw from a young age, along with many art courses that I took in school. The more I drew, the more confident I became, and it showed in my work. The same will happen to you. With practice and time, your art will improve more and more. Don't give up and remember that nobody, no matter how talented or not, learns overnight.

Good starter materials for drawing

A set of pencils, from 6H (very hard lead) all the way down to 6D (very soft lead)

An Ebony Pencil (it puts out a very dark graphite line)

A knead able eraser (Before using it, knead the heck out of it until it's very pliable. It is therapeutic to knead these things, when stressed.)

A white eraser, meant for artists, a good brand is Staedtler

Pad of Strathmore Sketch paper (50 lb paper weight, which means a lightweight paper) or Bond paper

Good lighting, such as an arm lamp

Start with the basics

With an HB (not too hard, not too soft) or regular pencil, start practicing sketching objects that aren't too complicated. I learned with oranges, pears, grapes, bananas and carrots. Draw each one, individually, ten times. Look at the shape and study it. Notice where the stem on it was, and how it rests on the table. Drawing is all about learning how to see objects as accurately as possible. Imagine following the edge of the object with your finger, and draw the silhouette on the paper. Then do it again. The idea is to learn to interpret what you see in three dimension (real life) into a two dimensional drawing (sketch.)

Shading

Put the fruit in a bright window with light coming at it from only one direction, so it casts a shadow on one side. Again, practice drawing each item, this time adding shading. See how different textured surfaces make the lighting a little bit different. For example, notice the skin of an orange as compared to a pear. One is smoother than the other. The shinier and smoother the subject, the more distinct the shading will be on its surface. On a rough object, shadows may be subtly mottled by each indentation or variation in the surface. Whatever the case, practice each fruit ten times again. Then, look at all the drawings you've done and notice how the last one is probably much better than the first. That is what practice does, it sharpens your seeing and helps you interpret what you see better on the paper.

Using erasers

When you have a large area to erase, use the white eraser. Erase lightly, in layers. If you erase hard, you may damage the paper. Paper can only handle so much manhandling, so it will start to break down if rubbed too much. To avoid that, use a light touch as you erase, and gently take off the unwanted area with one or two sweeps. If you want to erase a very small area but want to leave the area around it intact, use the knead able eraser. It will allow you to erase areas that the big, white eraser can't get into. When done, knead the eraser. You can use the same eraser over and over again. To clean graphite off a white eraser, just rub it repeatedly on a piece of scrap paper, to remove the dark graphite residue.

Experiment with different weights of pencils

The hardest pencils (H series) are for lighter colored shading and shadows. The softer pencils (B series) are for darker shading and shadows. The Ebony pencil is great for the darkest parts of shading and shadows. Experiment with them, and get used to using the different weights. After awhile you will become more comfortable switching from one to another. The 6H is the hardest; the 6B is the softest in the series. Try drawing fruit with the hard set, then try the same fruit with the soft set. Use your sharpener to keep the leads at comfortable sharpness for you. Finally, draw the fruit with both H and B series pencils, paying attention to using the H's for the object's lighter areas, and the B's for its darker ones. Use erasers to add highlights, too or for removing things. Add and subtract. Think of it as kind of drawing with the eraser itself, to create different tones and effects. Do ten of them, and remember to really focus on what you are seeing. Don't give up, remember, this is a practice exercise, and not meant for hanging on your wall. My practice art stayed hidden in my sketchbook, away from others. You don't have to make masterpieces, just enjoy what you're doing and experiment as you learn.

That is my mini drawing course in a nutshell. I have spent my life drawing, learning and trying new techniques and seeing what worked best for me. Believe in yourself. Focus on the object, and don't expect perfection. Right now is the beginning. Later you can switch to more interesting objects to draw. But, for now, stick with the fruit because they represent basic shapes like circles, crescents, and more. Adding color will come later, too. It's a lot of lessons all rolled into one, so take your time. You can do it, just believe in yourself. I believe you can do it, too so go for it!

The Wind and the Lion (1975) Part 7

In 1904, Morocco is the source of conflict by the powers of Imperial Germany, France, and the British Empire, all of whom are trying to establish a sphere of influence in that country. Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli (Sean Connery) is the leader of a band of Berber insurrectionists opposed to Sultan Abdelaziz and his uncle, the Bashaw of Tangier, whom Raisuli sees as corrupt and beholden to the Europeans. He kidnaps Eden Perdicaris(Candice Bergen) and her children, William (Simon Harrison) and Jennifer (Polly Gottesman) from their home, after murdering Sir Joshua Smith, a British friend of Eden's. Raisuli then issues an outrageous ransom, deliberately attempting to provoke an international incident in order to embarrass the Sultan and trigger civil war. Back in the United States, President Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Keith) is struggling for re-election, and decides to seize the kidnapping as both a political tool (coining the phrase "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!") and as an effort to flex America's military muscle as a new power - despite the protests of his cautious Secretary of State, John Hay (John Huston). The American Consul to Tangier, Samuel Gummere (Geoffrey Lewis), is unable to negotiate a peaceful return of the hostages, so Roosevelt sends the South Atlantic Squadron, under the command of Admiral French Ensor Chadwick (Roy Jenson), to Tangier, either to retrieve Perdicaris themselves or to force the Sultan to give in to Raisuli's demands. Over the course of time ...

Stop, Collaborate and Engage - Small Business Communication and Social Media Tools For Entrepreneurs

From smoke signals and carrier pigeons to smartphones and their ubiquitous apps, the way people interact across distances has drastically evolved. With each passing year, innovation appoints a new form of communication as revolutionary while decrying another form as passé.

During the past six months, you've probably learned what a "tweet" is and what it means to "friend" someone. Though both are interesting new forms of interaction, their applications to small business communication are less clear.

Twitter and Facebook are, at their most basic levels, additional channels aiding in small business communication. Like print or broadcast advertising, these social media initiatives allow a company to directly communicate with consumers. Though unlike advertising, these services allow for two-way communication where your audience - which includes customers, prospects, advocates, government entities and the general public - can respond. It is this engagement where many companies fall flat.

Kicking Off Your Social Media Initiatives

Simply setting up a Twitter handle and Facebook page does not plug you into the social media ether. Managing these accounts and consistently updating them is vital, so much so that many large companies are hiring full-time employees to man their social media initiatives. For entrepreneurs with limited time, there are many applications that can help you manage content for both services in one place, like Digsby (which has instant messaging integration as well), Brizzly or TweetDeck.

For entrepreneurs new to Twitter or other social media initiatives, the best approach is to do a few searches on words that are relevant to your business and try to find a handful of experts in your field to follow. Then, spend your first few days just "listening" to the conversation from these experts, resisting the urge to start singing the praises of your product or broadcasting your message. Once you get a feel for the kinds of things people talk about and how they do it on Twitter, start with the 2, 2, 2 rule. Post 2 original things, re-tweet two posts you find interesting or useful, and reply to two people about something they tweeted. This is a good way to be a valuable participant and to increase your "followers" number as people find the things you have to say to be useful.

For most entrepreneurs, a significant investment of time and resources strictly for social media initiatives is not feasible. Depending on a company's level of commitment to increasing its small business communication efforts, social media may not be the right channel, right now. But, for those companies that can invest resources to examine the social media landscape, determine if it is right for their business and actively engage in dialogue, Twitter and Facebook can be powerful tools to grow their small business communication strategy.

Though Twitter and Facebook are good starting points, if these social media darlings are where your social media knowledge ends, you need to know about the many other small business communication technologies that allow entrepreneurs to interact with customers and engage prospects.

Oldies but goodies...

The social media landscape has significantly changed the face of small business communication, but it does not mean previous technologies have been rendered useless. "Old" technologies, such as e-mail newsletters, instant messaging and message boards are still active and can still increase productivity (and sales!). Many entrepreneurs already have a strong understanding of these technologies and have probably used them in the past. Consider dusting off that old e-mail newsletter you belong to - you know, the one you haven't read in 2 years - or do a quick search of what message boards are out there. You may be reminded of and surprised at how useful these seemingly out-of-date services can be.

Some you've probably heard of, but may not know the full power of...

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has become the platform for business-focused social networking. By setting up a LinkedIn profile, users are able to post their work history and professional profiles for others to see. This tool presents opportunities for generating new business, reconnecting with old colleagues, and finding a job.

While many business users may have a LinkedIn profile, they may overlook the other small business communication tools LinkedIn provides. For example, LinkedIn Groups are a simple way to create an online forum where customers, prospects and industry insiders can exchange ideas. Similar to an e-mail newsletter, the Group allows invited LinkedIn users to interact with one another and for a company to communicate key messages. With some simple work on the front-end to get the group moving, an entrepreneur can then take a back-seat to let the patients run the asylum - while still maintaining his or her position as the group leader.

Wiki

A wiki (rhymes with tricky) is a website that allows users to edit the content that is posted on the page; the trick to wikis is ensuring the edits are accurate. Wikipedia, for example, is an editable online encyclopedia in which users can edit the content. The reason the information remains accurate is Wikipedia has designated individuals to monitor updates.

From a business perspective, a wiki is a great small business communication tool for companies with geographically distributed offices or teams. Users can post a document or other materials on an internal wiki and allow a group to review and edit the material in one place. Beyond the team collaboration, the wiki also helps with "version control," a problem that occurs when some users do not have the most up-to-date version of a document. Microsoft's SharePoint offers companies the ability to make internal wikis, as well as discussion boards.

Some small business communication tools you may not have heard of...

Yammer

Yammer is an enterprise microblogging service - think of it as Twitter for internal business communication. The service allows businesses to create their own internal communication channel and limit use to those who have a valid company e-mail address.

Yammer allows users to post questions, share news, ideas and documents, and post status updates to the entire group. This service allows short messages to be sent and for users to filter the messages they receive so they aren't bombarded with information that is not relevant to them. Much like a wiki, Yammer allows distributed companies to communicate in a private community, only in shorter bursts.

Ning

Ning lets users create social networks around topics about which they are passionate. Do you love cheese? If so, you can create a cheese lovers community. Do you fear bunnies? Then you can connect with others who share your phobia. With Ning, you create the network that matches your life.

Why should an entrepreneur care about all these different social media initiatives? If your company produces gourmet cheese, that cheese lovers group is a new business goldmine. Are you a psychiatrist just out of med school looking to build a client base? The bunny-phobic network is a breeding ground for potential patients. Whether setting up a targeted social network or joining one already in existence, Ning can connect your business with others that share your unique passions.

What's more, Ning has one of the more quantifiable ROI models of all social media. Ning's premium service allows the administrator to run ads on its network (this service does require a fee, though). Not only could you run your own ads, you could potentially run ads from other members of your community, creating a quantifiable revenue stream from your network.

When it comes to social media initiatives, there is no magic bullet to grow your business. But there is a unique combination that is right for every entrepreneur. By balancing time and resources, and examining the social media habits of its customers and prospects, a business can develop a small business communication strategy that will accelerate growth.

"GREEN" Spring Cleaning Tips That Even Mother Nature Would Love!

The sound of robins singing greets you in the morning. Tulips and daffodils are peeking through the ground. The sun is actually warm on the skin as you step outside. And with that, thoughts start turning to your home, and how you can make it bright as it is becoming on the outside. Whether it's getting that kitchen re-model done before the summer vacation, BBQs and holidays, spring is the time we research and start these projects. As we are contemplating these projects-large or small-we need to look at "healthy" or eco-friendly alternatives when painting, buying furniture and accessories, or just re-arranging furniture! The difference employing healthy home design, and even feng shui, can make a difference in our mental, spiritual and physical well-being is amazing. Healthy home design is especially important for those who suffer from upper respiratory ailments, asthma, allergies and headaches, have or are expecting babies and/or have elderly parents living with them.

So, how do you go about "spring cleaning like Mother Nature" and bring about healthy, green and/or eco-friendly cleaning principles into your space? The real push for eco-friendly design actually started in Europe about 30 years ago in studies done on "sick building syndrome" or Bau-biology. Sick building syndrome is caused by our vacuum sealed, no ventilation buildings that are filled with products (paint, carpet, furniture, cleaners...) that are emitting toxins and poisons into our air. Frequent migraines, fatigue, upper respiratory ailments and sore throats are only a few of the symptoms of SBS (sick building syndrome). Bau-biology is the study of design and construction of homes that fulfill all health/holistic requirements. They are spaces that are built with natural materials, utilize natural light, and avoid the effects of EMFs and uses energy and resource efficient systems. Slowly, we are catching up to Europe in our views towards green design and "healthy home" design choices. If you need some more reasons to "go au naturale" here they are:

1. Increase the health of all living occupants of the space (kids, pets, elderly, you...) by improving indoor air quality, reducing chemicals/toxins, increase water quality and mental health as you reduce stress and anxiety by becoming more "connected" with nature.
2. You will be following the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle); however, I'd like to add 1 more as Re-think! As you become more informed of all available choices, you will see how easy it is to decorate your home in a healthy and fashionable way!
3. Read The Lorax, by Dr Seuss!

OK DeAnna, you say, you've convinced me! But how do I start? Well, you've already done the hard part, making the commitment. I always suggest that my clients start by doing a MAJOR de-clutter and purge. It's OK to start small but you must go through each room, closet, drawer and cabinet and ask yourself: Do I LOVE it? Do I USE it? Do I NEED it? If you don't answer with a yes to any of the questions, you must get rid of it. If you have a hard time with this, you aren't alone. I teach workshops on this that are always on a Wait List with men and women, young and old. After you are done with your purge (I guarantee you will feel a cathartic release of the past-items=emotional baggage!) do a good spring cleaning. Use natural house-hold cleaners. Sun and Earth, 7th Generation and 3E Products (a division of Bante Design) are all wonderful products that are available in mainstream channels. Check their websites! There are also some great books out there if you have the time and energy to make your own cleaners. (Green Clean is one of my faves!). Here are some other tips to help you to de-tox your home:

· Use natural hygiene products and cleaners-these are chemicals that when made pollute the environment, our homes and our bodies.
· Go organic when possible-food (buy local and in season), clothing (man-made fibers are petroleum based and also include formaldehyde (new smell)) and linens.
· No VOC paints and finishes. All major paint manufacturers now make low or no VOC paint. Sherwin Williams has "Harmony" and Pratt & Lambert have Comfort Care in their lines. You must ask for it though! VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are the chemicals and toxins used to inhibit mold and quicken dry time, or "that new paint smell". Make the smart choice.
· Eliminate plastics and vinyls from your home. Studies have shown that PVC also off-gas like VOC and have been shown to cause certain types of cancers. Yes, this includes your shower curtain!
· Beware of what candles you buy! Candles are a leading cause of indoor air pollution (which studies have shown to be worse than outdoor air). The big offender here is the wick. Wicks in most inexpensive candles are made with lead.

Lead has been shown to cause a variety of illnesses. When purchasing candles for ambience, look at the wick, if you see a metal core-DO NOT BUY IT! Some wicks will be made with zinc, which is OK; however, the best choice is cotton. Wicks with metal are the cause of sooting and black smoke that can stain walls. Look for candles made from beeswax, palm or soy wax and scented with natural botanicals and/or essential oils.

Now let's apply what we've learned to individual rooms (and some more tips!):

Bedroom: The bedroom is the most important room of the home. We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping. Therefore, it is imperative that this room is chemical/toxin free and promotes rest and restoration, as well as romance. (In feng shui, the bedroom is related to the Relationship area) Here are a few tips:
· Keep this room clutter-free, especially under the bed. Air needs to be able to circulate around the body to rejuvenate. Clutter is a dust collector-if you haven't purged yet-Do it!
· Keep electronic items to a bare minimum in this room to reduce the EMFs. If you must have an electronic alarm clock and/or phone in the room, keep them at least 3 feet from your head to reduce this risk.
· Buy as luxurious linens as you can afford-this will add to the "sensuality" of the room. (3E Products offers SLEEP-an eco-friendly line of laundry products specially designed for bedding, blankets and pajamas. Stain pre-treater, fabric softener and liquid detergent are scented with lavender essential oil to help promote a healthy night's sleep).
· Lastly, lie down and see what the view is. This is the first and last thing you see before you fall asleep and this will stay with you subconsciously. Make it good, we want pleasant dreams.

Kitchen: Just as the bedroom is related to the Relationship area of the Bagua, the Kitchen is related to the Wealth/Abundance area of the home. Keep all appliances and plumbing in working order to keep "wealth" in the family. This room is for gathering and nourishing-keep this in mind when designing this room. Buy as good a quality kitchen tools and food/ingredients as possible to promote that feeling of wealth. Other tips for the kitchen:

· Again, clutter-free. All flat surfaces seem to attract clutter. Resist this urge! Keep all small appliances that are used infrequently in cabinets. Knives should also be kept away when not in use (negative, cutting energy).
· Since this room is about abundance and nourishment, keep pesticides out of this room period, and use natural cleaning products. Think healthy! This is a chemical/toxin free zone. (3E Products offers CLEAN-an eco-friendly dish-washing liquid).

Living Room: Another of the social, active rooms of the home the Living Room is where you want to think comfort and flexibility. This room must accommodate numerous activities from watching TV, reading, talking...floor plan must be able to adjust to whatever the function of the room is at that moment. Rounded corners on furniture will reduce injuries if kids or pets are present. To bring life into this room include upward-growing plants. This encourages growth and new opportunities. More tips for the Living Room:

· Flexible lighting is key in this area. Due to the variety of activities that take place in this room, think 3 types of lighting: general or overhead, task (desk, reading) and accent.
· 3E Products has an almond oil-base line of Environment Sprays to use instead of potpourri or other room fresheners. Scents include: lavender, orange, grapefruit, geranium, eucalyptus, lemongrass, bergamot, clary sage, and ylang ylang.

Bathroom: Bathrooms tend to accumulate more clutter than you'd think possible in such a small space. From out-dated medicines and make-up, to insufficient lighting and clutter filled counters can make for an unhealthy, crowded mess. It also should be stated that mold and mildew is a huge issue in this room. This room needs to be well-ventilated and cleaned frequently. Soap scum is a breeding ground for mildew! More tips for the bathroom:

· No rules on color here, be as bold and bright as your personality allows.
· If you don't already have an exhaust fan and/or a window, put one in to add the much needed ventilation in this room.
· Throw out ALL out-dated medicines and make-up as they are ineffective at the least, and unhealthy.
· There should be an overhead light (general) and a shower light (depending on building codes in your area) AND task lighting for putting on make-up and shaving.
· Keep all plumbing in good working order. Fix all leaks immediately-you don't want to waste water and/or create bigger problems.
· Purchase natural bath and body products and bathroom cleaners. You're doing a lot to create a healthy environment so why would want to poison your body. Again, if something is labeled "fragrance" it's a synthetic, petroleum based product-do not buy.

Home Office: The last room we'll look at is the Home Office. With more people working at home or self-employed, this space takes on new significance. Health issues concerning EMFs are prevalent in this room due to the concentration electronic equipment. Computers, printers, scanners and telephones can literally drain your energy. To off-set this, bring in plants like spider plants, philodendrons and ivies to create a healthier work environment. Jade, money and orange trees are auspicious and represent wealth and abundance in Feng Shui terms-place these by the office entrance! As a general rule, there should be 1 plant per 100 sp feet of space for good indoor air quality.

· Paper clutter is a constant in this space. Know how long you need to keep taxes and other important documents and shred the rest. Purge any un-needed/old papers from files. Keep all files up-to-date. Organizing at first will be a large project; however, the result will make you much more efficient in the long run.
· Task lighting is very important here-do not ignore. Save your eyes!
· Natural light and ventilation are important (as in all rooms) here due to the bombardment of EMFs in this space. Open up the windows year round to allow some fresh air to circulate, utilize crystals and sun catchers to "capture" the sun and disperse it throughout the space and maximize outside views with mirrors.

Here's a quick maintenance checklist to keep your space healthy:

Daily- Open windows to let fresh air in and pollutants out

Monthly- Vacuum or wipe down return and delivery vents to keep dust from blowing around, wash refrigerator drip pans to keep mold away.

Bi-monthly- Change furnace filters in winter months (use HEPA pleated filters which have more surface area to collect dirt/dust).

Annually- Have your furnace inspected to ensure that it's not leaking carbon monoxide.

Bi-annually- Have forced air ducts cleaned. Do not use fragrance or antimicrobial chemicals. If someone has allergies/asthma, do this annual.

Obviously we tackled a lot in a short amount of space, however, I hope some of these tips and information can help you create a beautiful and healthy space for you and your family. Life is stressful enough, our homes should not add to it.

Photoshop - Remove Background - Isolate Foreground - Tutorial

For HIGH QUALITY: FreePhotosAndArt.com Sharp full screen video on home site. In this tutorial we are going to remove an unwanted background. To do so, we first have to isolate the foreground objects that we want to keep, in this case, some beautiful purple orchids. When you open a file, photoshop places it in a window sized large enough to allow a full preview, while remaining small enough for other files to be opened and managed at the same time. This size is not suitable for advanced editing, so we are going to enlarge it. To do so, click the View menu, and click Fit on Screen. If you hover your cursor over an edge of the window, a double-arrow cursor will appear. Click and drag the edge to give yourself more editing room. Now return to the View menu, and select Actual Pixels. This will give you a full, uninterpreted view of your file, with each pixel in your file mapping to a pixel on your screen. Use the vertical and horizontal scroll bars to find a suitable area to begin your selection. I prefer to start at the edge of the image if the foreground is touching an edge. The tool we will be using is called the Polygonal Lasso Tool. To select this tool click and hold on the third tool from the top on your toolbar, until the flyout menu appears. Choose the Polygonal Lasso Tool from the flyout menu. The Polygonal Lasso Tool works like a dot to dot drawing game. Each click of your mouse defines a dot, and straight lines are drawn beween each dot. This may appear, at first ...

Mumia Abu-Jamal -- Another World is Possible

But the Bush regime has used that fear, that anxiety, that sense of being under attack to stoke the fires of war and now the US is involved in building and protecting a colony in the heart of the Middle East. That's why. It isn't enough to simply say "bring the troops home" as some have said. For to do so only means bring them home today and unleash them on some other unsuspecting people tomorrow. That is the recipe for postponing war, not ending it. War is indeed big business, but it more than that. It is a social tool by which governments have always mobilized larger social forces for their political ends. The ends of government- what has this always been? Power Why do you think the Bushites have unleashed the somber Ashcroft upon the American people- a man who lost a senate election to a dead man is now the ultimate arbiter of who may exercise civil rights in this new era?

Work at Home Internet Business Not As Easy You Think

You have a great service or a fantastic product. You've done your market research and there is a potential for income if you set up a business offering this product or service to the public. The internet is a good medium for what you have to sell, so you do some research on setting up a website. It sounds easy, and it looks easy. Everyone seems to have an internet work-at-home business and they've had great success. Link after link tells you that it's simple to set up an internet work-at-home business and you'll be raking in the money in no time. So you find a wonderful graphic designer who builds you a good-looking website, and you're ready to go, right?

Wrong. Unfortunately, the internet and how the virtual world works isn't simple at all. It doesn't take long before you realize that search engines aren't picking up your site, your Google ranking is next to nil (if you have a ranking at all), and there aren't any visitors flocking to your virtual doors. There is far more to having an internet work-at-home business than having a website and something to sell.

Fundamental skills about search engine optimization are a must, if you want your online business to survive. You're going to need to learn how to not only attract customers, but how to have your website noticed by search engines. You'll need to research keyword content, meta tags, brand building, internet marketing... the list goes on. In fact, setting up an online business involves so many factors that some companies specialize in boosting website ranking and site optimization.

Most of what needs to be done to a website to optimize it to attract search engines isn't very hard. Sometimes, just wording your web content properly or adding fresh content on a regular basis can make a huge difference to your internet work-at-home business. There are some great tools and software that can help as well. Sitting down to do some research and learn about what helps an online business be successful is part of the end result of making money. Time and effort are all part of setting up shop, so schedule in a period of optimizing your site and sit down to do the work.

Finding a mentor that already has search engine optimization (SEO) skills is probably a good idea, unless you can narrow down which SEO business or company is going to be the best one for your needs and that won't break your budget. Asking someone familiar with SEO or talking to a person who already has a successful website that earns income can help you quickly narrow down the things you need to do to boost your own business.

While this may seem more daunting than setting up a traditional business in a store or office, an internet work-at-home business still remains a better choice. Overhead costs are low, there isn't any rent to pay for your location, and you can set your own hours without any supervisor or boss looking over your shoulder. The only thing to realize is that an internet work-at-home business involves the same time and effort as any other traditional business, and there aren't any instant millions to be made.

There can be some riches for your business in a short period, though. If you put in the time and effort required to optimize your website for an internet work-at-home business, you'll see results much faster than those you'd notice in a traditional business environment. Online marketing is very rapid and SEO efforts pay off quickly. All you have to do is learn a little and apply yourself to setting up your online business properly.

Chainsaw Sharpener - A Must Have Tool For Chainsaw Maintenance

If you want to be able to take your chainsaw out of the garage and use it, whenever you need it, without trouble you will have to do some chainsaw maintenance, even if it's out of season. There are some basics you need to do to make sure you maintain your chainsaw well.

Sharpening:

You must keep your chainsaw sharpened. You can easily do this with a chainsaw sharpener. You can tell your chain is dull in a couple of ways. Is it biting through the wood? Chainsaw chains should grab the wood and pull itself through the cut. When a chain fails to do this it is probably because it is dull. Also a sharp chainsaw should throw out decent sized wood chips. If you find your chainsaw is throwing out nothing more than saw dust you need to sharpen your chain.

A dull chain makes cutting much more difficult and increases the chance of accidents. So making sure you have a sharp chain is imperative to safe cutting.

The Fuel System:

Make sure to keep the fuel free of moisture and all other contaminates. Chainsaws use a mix of oil and gas. The exact ratio for the mixture will depend on which model you are using. To avoid using the wrong gas make sure to label the gas can. It's easy to use the wrong one with all the small yard tools having different gas/oil ratios. You do not want to use gas mixed for another appliance.

Check the fuel filter often during peak use times. It can easily become clogged and this decreases the flow of fuel going to the saw. Make sure you clean your fuel filter regularly and change it when needed, which may be up to once a week if you are using your saw a lot.

The Chain:

In addition to keeping your chain sharp there are other factors that need to be checked to make sure your McCulloch chainsaw is running safely and in optimal condition. You want to check the chain to make sure it is loose, but not too loose. If your chainsaw's chain is too tight or too loose it will cause problems. When the saw is off the chain brake is released you should be able to manually feed the chain through the saw. Make sure you frequently check the bar retaining nuts as they can come loose from all the vibration.

Give your saw a once over before you fire it up, each time you use it. Look for bent teeth, or bends or crimps in the bar. Make sure the chain moves easily around the bar.

There is no warning light when you are getting low, and you may be surprised how quickly go through it. Check the bar and chain oil level frequently during use. Add more before you see the smoke coming from your saw.

Air Filter:

McCulloch chainsaws are always used in dusty environments. it's just part of what chainsaws do. Because of the dusty environment you must clean the air filter after every use. Before you expose the air filter, make sure to clean the outside of the saw and move it to an area away from sawdust or other materials that could fall into the carburetor. Remove the filter and clean it with an air compressor or as recommended in your owners' manual. During peak usage periods you will probably need to replace the air filter once a week.

Engine:

It is best to take your chainsaw to a professional chainsaw technician if you suspect there is an engine problem. They have the tool and expertise to efficiently and correctly fix your chainsaw.

Out of Season Storage:

If you don't use your chainsaw for more than 30 days at a time, you need to take some special precautions to limit damage to your saw. Drain all fuel out of the tank. Next, drain all fuel from the line and carburetor by starting the saw and running it until it stops. Drain all oil and remove the bar and chain. Store the chain in an airtight container that is filled with oil so that the entire chain is submerged. Apply a light coating of oil to the bar and wrap it in paper. Clean the exterior and interior of the saw. Remove the spark plug and apply a rust inhibitor into the combustion chamber. Replace spark plug and pull the starter rope slowly several times to distribute the inhibitor over the cylinder.
